Immigrated in 1847 OBITUARY PROVIDED BY BRIAN STEPHENS Valentine Democrat Valentine Cherry County Nebraska August 16, 1900 Obituary John Dunn was born in YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, on January 25, 1824 and died at the residence of his son, Grant, in this city August 14, 1900. Age 76 years, 6 mongths and 19 days. He came to America in 1848 and located in the state of Ohio. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Saulsbury on his 25th birthday. Into this union were born seven children, only two of whom survive him, Grant and Florence. His wife preceded him in death a little more than two years. Mr. Dunn, at the beginning of the war, was captain of the Home Guard, which he drilled regularly twice a week, but at the time of the enlistment of the company in the regular service he did not go with them by reason of sickness. Subsequentrly he enlisted in the regular service, Co. E., 144th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers, on the 2nd day of May, 1864, and was made first sergeant. He was honorably discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio, on August 24th, 1864, by reason of the expiration of service. He was an honored and revered member of Col. Wood Grand Army Post No. 208, of Valentine, Nebraska, for several years previous to his demise. In 1865 he moved with his family to Iowa and in 1886 he came with them to Nebraska, and located in Cherry County where he has since residen. "Grandpa" Dunn, as he was commonly called, was a true husband and father, and was greatly attached to his family. As a citizen and neighbor he was strictly loyal and upright in all his dealings with his fellow man and was warmly admired and esteemed by all who knew him. His illness lasted for several months but during it all he was patient and kind, and all that loving hearts and devoted hands could do for his restoration and comfort was unsparingly bestowed. He wa rather anxiously waiting for the end to come that he might be exempt from the burdens of the flesh and be at rest. The children and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in the hour of their sore trial and bereavement. The funeral took place from the M. E. Church under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post of which he was a member, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and neighbors, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery west of town. A. F. CUMBOW.
