Edwards was a student at Clark Seminary in Aurora, Ill., but left school to enlist in Company I, 141st Illinois Infantry, on May 1, 1864. Mr. Edwards' war experiences were mostly derived from the pleasure of chasing guerillas out of Kentucky, as by that time the Confederate army had been pushed farther south. Mr. Edwards confesses he was only under fire once and that the bullets went overhead then and didn't harm a soul. That was when he was on Payne's raid through Kentucky. His fright then was nothing compared to the scare he got one night when he was making his rounds of the picket posts as orderly sergeant, in camp at Columbus, Ky. He was about half way between two posts when he heard the most unearthly noise that had ever greeted his ears. He stopped dead still. the noise continued and Mr. Edwards went forward carefully, thinking it was some trick of the enemy. Edward and one of the guards joined the company, and their feet shook in their boots. Finally a grotesque figure loomed upon the horizon and the noise grew louder. Approaching the figure, the men found the thing was a mule and that the poor beast had the distemper. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and their daughter, Miss Marjory Edwards, and instructor at the Teacher's College, live at 1115 Neosho. ******************************************* The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 02 Oct 1930 THE EDWARDS FUNERAL Funeral services for Robert B. Edwards, veteran of the Civil war, who died Friday night at his home, 1115 Neosho, were held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Edwards home. Rev. Robert Ingalls, pastor of the First Congregational church, conducted the services. Interment was in Maplewood cemetery. Pallbearers were: H. D. McKee, L. T. Bang, F. B. Ross, J. P. Drake, C. S. Lawrence and Wilford Riegle. Persons from out-of-town who attended the funeral were: Bertel Stoddard, of Sloan, Iowa; Mrs. Dorothy E. Sandy, of Kansas City; Bert E. Green, of Frankfort, Ind.; Will Ross, of Kansas City, Mo.; Neva Ross, of Topeka; Mrs. A. B. Hall, of Monrovia, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Otis Farr, of Redlands, Calif. Robert B. Edwards was born September 10, 1844, in Marshall county, Ill. He was a student in Clark Seminary, at Aurora, Ill., during the Civil war. On May 1, 1864, he left school to enlist in Company I, 141st Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was made a sergeant. He was with Payne's raid through Kentucky. Mr. Edwards' service consisted mostly in helping to chase guerillas out of Kentucky, as by that time the Confederate army had gone south. Mr. Edwards received his discharge from the army October 10, 1864. Following the war, he entered Northwestern university, at Evanston, Ill. An A.B. degree was granted him from Northwestern in 1872 and he received an M.A. degree in 1875. Mr. Edwards took up the practice of law at Lacon, Ill. At one time he was the city attorney of Lacon. In 1891 Mr. Edwards' health failed him and he discontinued his practice. As an effort to improve his health Mr. Edwards came to Kansas in 1908. After traveling about Kansas for a short time Mr. Edwards decided to make his home in Emporia. Mr. Edwards has made his home in Emporia since 1908 and has been active in all patriotic organizations. He was a member of the Preston B. Plumb post of the Grand Army of the Republic and was a past commander of the post. An effort has always been made by Mr. Edwards to keep in touch with civic activities and politics. He celebrated his 86th birthday three days before he became seriously sick September 12. Mr. Edwards is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucy F. Edwards; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy E. Sandy, of Kansas City; and Miss Marjory Edwards, who has been living with her parents, and one sister, Mrs. Mary C. Brevoort, of Rutland, Ill. The coffin will be open for comrades and friends at the Roberts-Blue chapel all day Sunday and at the chapel Monday until 3:30 o'clock. The coffin will be open at the Edwards home Monday from 3:30 o'clock until 4 o'clock.
