PAWNEE REPUBLICAN, May 30, 1918. WILLIAM A. WOODS William A. Woods, an early days resident of Pawnee County and a brother of L. H. and J. E. Woods, of this city, died at his home in Kansas City, Thursday, May 23, 1918, aged 74 years and 25 days. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Pawnee City Friday afternoon, and interment was had in the Pawnee City Cemetery. William A. Woods was born in Madison County, Indiana, on the 28th day of April, 1841, and came to Nebraska with his parents in 1857, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Martin in Pawnee City on January 6, 1870, and to this union the following children were born: Myron R., of Oregon, and Frank, of Kansas City. He enlisted from Pawnee County on the 12th day of November, 1862, to serve nine months, and was mustered into the United States service at Brownville, Nebraska, on the 8th day of December, 1862, as a private on Cap. Lewis Mills, Co. F. 2nd Reg. Vol, Cav., Col. Robert W. Furnas commanding. He was constantly with his command, and bore a gallant part in the battle of White Stone Hill, Dakota, his regiment being first to open fire which started the battle between 1,700 Union troops and 5,500 Sioux Indians. He rendered faithful service to his country and was honorably discharged at Brownville on the 14th day of December, 1863, by reason of expiration of term of service.
