Obituary for Joseph Sellers Woods Pawnee City Chief, Pawnee City, Nebraska Sudden Death The community Monday morning was startled by the announcement that “Uncle Joe” Woods had departed this life. His death occurred about daylight, Monday morning, October 11th, 1880 and was caused by paralysis of the heart and was preceded by but a few hours illness, during which he suffered intensely. For years, in fact for most of his life, he has suffered from heart troubles, and such a sudden death was expected. He was born in Shelby County, Kentucky and was 75 years old on the 23rd of last September. While a boy his family moved to Jefferson County, Indiana, and here and in other parts of that state he lived until he came to Nebraska, twenty-three years ago. He married while in Jefferson County. Coming to this state he engaged in farming. Accumulating considerable property, about fourteen years ago he built the large brick hotel in Pawnee City, known as the Woods’ House. About nine years ago his wife died, since which time he has resided with his children and at the Woods’ House , where his face has become familiar to the traveling public. Ten children were born to him; of these Mrs. Dr. McCasland was the oldest, Mrs. Hammond, John, Lewis, and Will Woods of this county, Joshua Woods of Dorchester, Neb., and Mrs. Dr. Stewart of Deadwood, Dakota are the children now living.
