Description	:	The Emporia Gazette, 11 Jul 1921, Mon WILLIAM HUMPHREY [sic] DEAD William Humphrey died Saturday evening at the home of his son, E. W. Humphrey, 1105 Commercial Street, after a prolonged illness. Mr. Humphrey was born in Llanidlos [sic], Wales, July 1, 1835. When he was 14 years of age, he moved to America with his mother, Mrs. Mary Humphrey Bebb, and his stepfather, William Bebb, settling in Wisconsin. Humphrey, 1105 Commercial Street, after a prolonged illness. Mr. Humphrey was born in Llanidlos [sic], Wales, July 1, 1835. When he was 14 years of age, he moved to America with his mother, Mrs. Mary Humphrey Bebb, and his stepfather, William Bebb, settling in Wisconsin. In 1862 Mr. Humphrey came to Kansas and enlisted with Company G, 6th Kansas Cavalry. He served as a sergeant under Captain Robert Henderson. He was discharged in 1865 at DeValls Bluff, Ark. After receiving his discharge, Mr. Humphrey returned to Wisconsin and the same year moved to Kansas and settled in Emporia. Soon after coming to Emporia, Mr. Humphrey helped erect Patty's Mill, and was the first man to break the sod for the old Normal building. He was married to Miss Anne Owens at Emporia December 25, 1868. She died February 26, 1902. Mr. Humphrey is survived by one son, E. W. Humphrey, of Emporia; four grandchildren, Mrs. Roy Bassett, Mrs. Hardin McDill, William Humphrey and Hattie Humphrey, all of Emporia, and one great-grandchild, Roy Bassett, Jr. He also is survived by four half-sisters and one half-brother. They are: Mrs. Liza Roberts, of Norton, Kan.; Mrs. Hugh P. Davis, of Emporia; Mrs. Anne Palmer, who lives in Washington; Mrs. Hannah Bennett of Emporia, and Evan Roberts, of Norton. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home. Rev. H. P. Morgan and the members of the G.A.R. were in charge of the services. Interment was made in the Maplewood Cemetery.
