But honeyed words do not pay bills, in these hard times, especially those who subscribed to have the work done and have not paid should now do their part to require him for his labor. Shan Wright and his lawn mower, rake and other necessary tools have brought wonders in the way of transforming Evergreen Cemetery from a forsaken county graveyard, overgrown with weeds and grass, broken trees, etc., into a comely and respectable resting place for the bodies of out departed friends. Mr. Wright has worked diligently and with an interest and a pride in the effect he was producing which deserves, in addition to a liberal salary, what he undoubtedly receives from every interested stockholder, a generous need of commendation and praise. He has shown the people that the place may betoken their memory still green for their departed friends. We don't believe the place will ever again assume the inserted, forlorn appearance presented to the writer of this first visit to it five or six months ago. He reports the people there as prospering and happy. Sidney Wright has grown to be a man and is becoming famous as a naturalist, studying the habits and life of birds - especially crows. Wright, 88, will be held Monday at 2p.m. At the Osman chapel, with the Rev. H. Phipps officiating. Mr. Wright died at his home in Britt Friday after an illness of several months. He was born April 16, 1862, at Mt. Vernon, I'll., and spent most of his married life in Britt and vicinity. Surviving are the widow and 2 children, Mrs. Edith Brewster of Britt and George Wright of Waterloo. Page 1, The Britt News-Tribune, Britt, Iowa, Thursday, March 9, 1950 Another Pioneer Passes This Life Death came to S.K. Wright at his home in Britt early Friday morning, March 3. He had been in failing health for many months. At death he had reached the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 17 days. Funeral services were held at the Osman Funeral Chapel, Monday afternoon, March 6, at 2 o'clock with the Rev. J.S. Phipps, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, in charge of the last rites. Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. Mr. Wright was born in a log cabin at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, April 16, 1862, a son to Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Wright. He is the last of a family of thirteen. Being in poor health in his early years, the parents decided to bring him west. The father bought four hundred acres of land northeast of Wesley in 1877. On May 22, 1879, the parents and eight of the children started west in two covered wagons drawn by two horses each. Having followed Prairie trails for four weeks the family arrived in Britt on June 24, a town then only nine years old. "Shan", then a boy of 17, batched it on the farm where he broke eighty acres of raw prairie the first year. The family lived in Britt. In 1882 the Wright's sold the farm and the men worked in the haying industry. Mr. Wright worked for Frank Rogers until the Roger's hay barn and press burned in the late 80's. Following this disaster Mr. Wright took work at the Evergreen cemetery at zbritt and served as sexton for many years, being the first man to clean up the cemetery and mow the grass with a lawn mower. His last work was that of a salesman for a monument company. Mr. Wright was married to Miss Augusta Stock in 1885. Five children were born to this union. One son died in infancy. Sadie and Lucian also proceeded the parents in death. George Wright of Waterloo, and Edith (Mrs. C.O. Brewster) of Britt, survive the passing of the father, as also does his wife, Mrs. Molly Olson Wright, whom he married a number of years ago. Others missing this departed loved one include five stepchildren; Otto Olson, Mason City; Ruth Ella Peterson and Ruby Shannon, Davenport, Ia.,; Lone and Russell Olson, Seattle, Wash.; also four grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
