Description	:	Shirley's memorial service was held on November 22, 2014. Shirley was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Slater, on Margrove Street, later renamed Emmerson Street, she was the daughter of the late Francis "Frank" James and Mary Elizabeth Herider Metcalfe. On June 25, 1941, in Slater, she married Willard H. Haley, who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1993. Shirley is survived by three sons, one daughter; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Beverly (nee Grimes) Haley; a brother, Harry, and two sisters, Frances Stipes and Vianne Gilson. They would go roller-skating or just ride around town. Their marriage of nearly 52 years started the month after she graduated from Slater High School. Willard received his draft notice three days before, so they had a quick honeymoon in the Ozarks, and Willard departed on Army Air Corp Basic Training. Shirley stayed in Slater. Willard reported for duty in Glendale, California, where war preparations were under way. Shirley joined Willard there after he completed officer candidate school. Shirley did her job as a "Rosie the Riveter" building planes for the war effort. When the war was over, Willard and Shirley returned to Slater to make a home and raise their family. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked a few years at the Town and Country Shoe Factory, and as manager of the City of Slater swimming pool, even though she never learned to swim. She was a Cub Scout den mother, and encouraged scouting for all three of her sons, whom all reached the rank of Eagle. She was equally proud of her daughter, who was selected Miss Slater in 1980. Shirley was a life-long member of Slater United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and staying busy with clubs. She made many friends, and some very close life long friendships where she became a second mom.
