Description	:	ROBERTS Funeral services for Shurod Elmore Smiley Roberts Jr., will be held on Wednesday February 12 at 11am in the chapel of Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Rd, Jacksonville, with Ordained Deacon Steve Leggett officiating. Burial will follow in Ferreira Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6-8. Mr. Roberts, a lifelong resident of Oceanway (74 years), died Saturday February 8th, at Lanier Manor Nursing Home from a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Roberts, a lifelong resident of Oceanway (74 years), died Saturday February 8th, at Lanier Manor Nursing Home from a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Roberts graduated from Technical High School in 1958 received the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. Upon graduating high school, Mr. Roberts joined the US Navy, serving his Four year Navy career on several ships including the USS Myles C. Fox which was filmed in the movie The Longest Day. While serving on the Fox he received a Commendation for his contribution to the Fox winning the Battle Efficiency Award, Operations Award and the ASW Award. Smiley enjoyed his Naval cruises to the Mediterranean countries and liberty in Greece, Spain, France, Italy among many others. After his Navy career, Smiley worked at Simplex and then on to Stanley Industrial making and installing commercial fans. Smiley was paraplegic from a car wreck in 1974, and for many years, could frequently be seen selling his hand made fishing tackle from his van at Drummond Point or camping at Huguenot Park. Smiley was predeceased in death by his Father, Shurod E. Roberts Sr. in 1971 and his beloved Mother Clara Bess Roberts in 2012, Great Niece Amy Sea, Brother in Law Cecil Ingle. He is survived by his siblings, Frances Ingle, Shirley (Steve) Duke, and Abel James AJ (LaDonna) Roberts, and a host of nieces and nephews.
