Rutherford Atwood on October 29, 1925, in Fairmont, and passed away March 15, 1989, at the St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 16 days of age. Atwood Jr. was born to Sidney E. Atwood Sr. and Dorothy A. Rutherford Atwood on October 29, 1925, in Fairmont, and passed away March 15, 1989, at the St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 16 days of age. He was one of 4 children in the family. Sid’s early education was received in the Fairmont School system and he graduated from Fairmont High School in 1943. Following graduation, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. As everyone knew, war had been long declared, and Sid decided to join the Army Air Corps. He served his country well from 1944 until 1946. On April 9, 1946, Sid enlisted in the Air Corps of the Army Reserve from which he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. On July 3, 1949, Sid was united in marriage to Delores Fisher at Geneva, and to this union two children were born. Sid continued to help his father farm the family acreage four miles west of Fairmont for the next eight years. In August of 1957, the Atwood’s moved to York where Sid became employed as a loading supervisor for the York Packing Company. He worked there until the company closed in 1986, and then began full time work with several part-time jobs. He assisted Emmett Scott and auctioneer Bob Roth quite often, and in addition, enjoyed helping his sons in the A.A. Leasing Inc., whenever he was needed. Sid had a great love for many people and many things. Above all, he loved his wife and family. Their devotion to each other found them attending craft shows all over the region where they enjoyed showing and selling Sid’s woodworking wares. As both sons were quite athletic, they followed them around for years watching them play football, baseball and soccer. His love for kids extended beyond his own. He helped develop other kids and coached them in summer baseball leagues for many years. There were many other areas he enjoyed participation, but one more love stands out. He possessed a most satisfying love for the world of Masonry. In the following list of Masonic brotherhood, he served either as an officer or main leader: Solomon Chapter 33 Royal Arch Masons, Naomi Council 26 Cryptic Masons, Joppa Commandery 17 Knights Templar, Lincoln Valley Scottish Rite, Sir Galahad Priory 7 of the Knight York Cross of Honor, York Rite College Under Dispensation, Couer-de-Lion Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, Merdian Shrine Clowns, Seostris Temple of Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, York Chapter of Demolay (the Demolay Dad). In addition to these memberships in Masonry, he also was a member of local Masonic Lodges at Fairmont Lodge 48 A.F. &A.M. and at York Lodge 56 A.F. &A.M. Sid was also a member of the American Legion Post 19 of York, and Voiture 103 40 & 8. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York and was a prior member of the Fairmont United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a child sister. Sid is survived by his wife, Delores of York, two sons, Steve and his wife, Bonnie, of Lexington and Jim and his wife, Donna, of Grand Island; two sisters, Isabelle Moser of Friend, and Nellie Jean Martin of Fairmont; six grandchildren, Trisha, Travis and Tyson of Lexington and Brandon, Brett and Kendra of Grand Island. Sid will be long remembered for his warm friendliness to all who knew him well and for his commitment to those interests he found in life. Funeral services were conducted form the First United Methodist Church in York on Saturday, March18, with the Rev. Bob Call officiating. Mrs. Richard Smithson accompanied Robert O. Rhodes, who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” Those serving as pallbearers were Howard D. Blatchford, Jerry E. Apetz, L. Badger Halsey, Robert O. Roth, Emmett L. Scott, James J. Wallingford, James W. Wallingford and Fred O. Wyant. Interment with Masonic graveside services by Dr. David Portwood were conducted from the Geneva Public Cemetery.
