Description	:	Sidney E. Engman, 93 of Vermillion, SD passed away Friday, August 12, 2011 at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point. Funeral Mass will be 11:00am Thursday, August 18th at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion with Fr. Donald Imming officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at Vermillion with military graveside rites by Clay Post # 3061. Visitation will begin at 6:00pm with a scripture service beginning at 7:00pm Wednesday, August 17th at the church. Sidney was born September 2, 1917, in Vermillion, South Dakota to Eddie and Lillian (Richardson) Engman. He was raised in Clay County where he spent his entire life. He married Reidella M. Rubida on August 8, 1939 in Ponca, NE. Sid worked for Gamble Skogmo stores from 1936 to 1957. He then worked as a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1981. Sid served his country in World War II as an infantryman in the 35th infantry Division in France from June to September, 1944 when he was captured outside Nancy, France. He remained a P.O.W. until the end of the war in April, 1945. He received the Purple Heart, EAME Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was a long time member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post #3061, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Ex-prisoners of War Association and Eagles Post No. 2421. He was also a retired member of the Vermillion Fire Department. Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 72 years, Reidella; one daughter, Julie (John) Springer of West Des Moines, IA; grandson, John III (Lori) Springer, Erie, PA; granddaughter, Juliann (Peter) Cline, West Des Moines, IA; and five great-grandchildren Sydney, Emma, Molly, Ela and Annie; and many other relatives and friends who loved him very much. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by great-granddaughter Lily, his brother, Robert Engman; sister, Bonnie Carlsen; and stepfather, Harry Brammer. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be directed to VFW Clay post #3061, PO Box 375 Vermillion, SD 57069 or USD Track Team, in care of Mark Maturi PO Box 5555 Vermillion, SD 57069. We will love you forever and always!
