Description	:	SILAS SHEPHERD, PIONEER, DIES AT AGE OF 85 YEARS Silas Shepherd, resident of Villisca and vicinity for fifty-nine years, died Monday at 8:30 p. m. at his home here, his death resulting from the infirmities of old age. He was born Nov. 7, 1844, in Wapello county, Iowa, and was 85 years old at his death. All his life he lived in Iowa, with the exception of two years in Illinois. Read More	SILAS SHEPHERD, PIONEER, DIES AT AGE OF 85 YEARS Silas Shepherd, resident of Villisca and vicinity for fifty-nine years, died Monday at 8:30 p. m. at his home here, his death resulting from the infirmities of old age. He was born Nov. 7, 1844, in Wapello county, Iowa, and was 85 years old at his death. All his life he lived in Iowa, with the exception of two years in Illinois. In 1853 he went to Union, Iowa, near Afton and resided there until 1871 when he came to Villisca, and the remainder of his life was spent in and near here. He was married in 1865 to Miss Emma Lewis of Afton, and to them were born twelve children. Those living are Mrs. Lou Higgins, Mrs. Myrtle Gaskell, Mrs. Bertha Parcher, Mrs. Ruth Spargur, Walter, Charley, Ed and Russell Shepherd of Villisca, Mrs. Geo. Carlisle of Bonanza, Ore., and Mrs. I. N. Craighead of Pittsburg, Calif. Mrs. Shepherd preceded her husband in death on Aug. 29, 1905, a daughter, Mrs. Ella Penwell, died in 1901 and a son, Lon, died in 1923. Mr. Shepherd's funeral was held at his home Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Geo. A. Lawton of Villisca and Rev. E. S. Menoher of Mount Ayr, Iowa. The singing was by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Nordyke, Mrs. L. W. Scott and H. E. Dow, .with Mrs. F. G. Kunce at the piano. The pallbearers were S. C. Ashmore, Ray Mann, Center Gourley, Forest Means, John Smith and Chas. Sweeten, and interment was in the Villisca cemetery. Those here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shepherd, Farragut, Iowa; Mrs. Ida Jordan, Des Moines; and Chas.
