Grimm 1912 The funeral on Sunday last, March 17th., of Simon P. Grimm, Springfield, was a remarkable demonstration of regard and sympathy; citizens in the different walks of life, attending regardless of the bad condition of the roads, in desire to pay tribute to the memory of this good man. The deceased was the son of Christian Grimm, who immigrated from Germany in 1834, settling in South, Lunenburg County, where he married Sarah Lohnes. To them were born five sons, William, John, Simon, James, and Charles respectively. When their little flock had matured into manhood they left their abode in South with four sons, and located here, where he was laid to rest in 1904, and his beloved wife following about two years later. Deceased acquired a teacher's education, and taught in Lunenburg County a few years. It is in this vocation that he met his first wife, Permilla Schaufenburg. Two sons were born; then deceased steered his ship of fate to the open waters of the Atlantic, to return and find that kind friends had laid to rest his loving wife and an infant daughter. Shortly after, deceased came to this place, where he met and married his second wife, Mary C. Mailman. He then opened a mercantile business here, and having met with a financial loss in the lumbering enterprise, his late business was conducted in his beloved partner's name, "Mary C. Grimm." On the 14th. inst., after eating a hearty dinner he, as usual went to his post of duty, where he stricken with apoplexy at 2:30 o'clock, passing away to his reward about one hour later. Deceased, who was in his sixty-first year of his age, leaves a loving wife; four brothers, before mentioned; and eight sons, Messrs. Richard, H&SW, Railway, conductor, of Yarmouth; Stanley of Bridgetown; Clayton of North Springfield; Ellison, Frederick, Gordon, Perley, and Ralph, at home; and three daughters, Mrs. R.M. Harnish of Springfield; Misses Oda and Hilda, at home. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. A memorial service was held in the Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a life long member, and was conducted by the Rev. T.P. Meek, assisted by the Rev. C.S. McLearn. The scripture reading was found in St. John, 14th. chapter, text 1st.Samuel 20th. chapter and 18th. verse, "And thou shalt be missed, because thy seat is empty." The choir rendered special music, Mr. Arthur G. Hirtle, singing beautifully the deceased favourite solo, "Face to Face." The widowed mother and family have the profound sympathy of the whole community in their sad bereavement. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
