Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, January 16, 1947 Smith Jennings Cannon, youngest son of Bluford and Sarah Cannon, was born April 22, 1870, in Johnson county (sic), Nebraska, and departed this life at Nelson, Nebraska, on January 11, 1947, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 18 days. His father passed on before he was two years old, leaving his mother to raise and provide for the family. After several years they moved to Smith county (sic), Kansas, where he grew to manhood. On December 30, 1897, he was united in marriage to Iva Jones, daughter of James R. and Mathilda Jones at Smith Center, Kansas. To this union four children were born: Ocie Flower of Nelson; Arden and Bluford of Beatrice; Arline Humston of Millard, Nebr. He had been in the Grocery Business at Reamsville and Colby, Kansas, and Cozad, Nebraska. In 1908 he homesteaded in the Sand Hills of Blaine county (sic), Nebraska. He moved to Nelson in 1915 where he spent most of his years working at his chosen occupation as a carpenter, until failing health forced him to retire. Although unable to be up and around for some time he was always cheerful, never complaining, and he never lost his keen sense of humor. After the departure from this life of his loving wife and companion on April 27, 1946, he has spent the remaining months of his life at the home of his daughter, Ocie Flower. He has now gone on to join his departed mate where there is no parting. He leaves to mourn his passing, four children, eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter; a number of nephews and nieces, and a host of friends. The funeral service was held in the Klawitter Chapel, Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. C.M. Foust; burial in Nelson cemetery (sic).
