Survived by Three Daughters, Four Sons, and Thirty-seven Grand-Children Mrs. Carl Haker, one of the well known women of Delaware county, committed suicide by drowning, Monday forenoon, March 25th, 1918. The Body of Mrs. Haker was found by her son Frank Haker, upon his return from the field shortly before the noon hour. Mrs. Haker had been in her usual state of health in the morning when the family ate their breakfast, and when the men left for the field. Some time during the forenoon she quietly and entirely unbeknown to the members of the family, left the house and went to the spot where in a moment of despondency she ended her life by throwing herself into the tank, which contained only about fifteen inches of water. Sophia Burdt was born in Scinso, Germany May 17, 1834, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Boldikow, Germany, at the age of 14 years. She was united in marriage, with Carl Haker in Boldikow, on October 20th, 1854, and in April, 1883, she and her husband came to America, and settled at Delaware, this county. Soon after coming to the county they left Delaware and moved to Hopkinton, and lived there for a number of years. For some years they also resided in Hazel Green township. During recent times she has made her home in the family of her son, Frank Haker, near Spring Branch. Mrs. Haker was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive her. The children surviving her are Mrs. Minnie Grimm of Dundee; Mrs. Herman Harder of Utica, Montana; Mrs. Herman Salow of Manchester; William Haker of Raymond, South Dakota; Charles and Henry Haker of Ryan; and Frank Haker of Spring Branch. Besides the seven children there also survive her thirty-seven grand-children and twenty-two great grand children. Mr. and Mrs. Haker celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1904, and in 1906 the husband and father died at his home in Hazel Green. Funeral services will be held at the German Lutheran church at Ryan Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. The pastor of the Lutheran church at Earlville will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Golden. The tragic death of Mrs. Haker has brought deep sorrow to those attached to her by tender family ties, and to those outside the family circle who had known and loved her. Mrs. Haker was a kind hearted and generous woman and lived a life of devotion and service to the members of her family and all she loved. She was a devout member of the Lutheran church and attended the services when not prevented by ill health. The sincere sympathy of many friends is extended to the bereaved family.
