Russell Reemts And Woman Companion Die In Accident Oct. 30 The Sunday Sioux City Journal carried the following account of the tragic death of a former well-known Akron young man and a graduate of the local high school: Sgt. Russell J. Reemts, 27, 612 W. Sixth street, stationed at the army airbase here, was killed instantly and a 20-year-old woman companion suffered fatal injuries SAturday morning when their automobile struck a loaded boxcar at a spur crossing here. The woman, Mrs. Pauline Mae Holder, 217 Kansas street, died in an abulance on the way to a hospital. Police Capt. C. C. Robinson said the car driven by Sgt. Reemts was traveling west at a high rate of speed when it struck the boxcar as it stood in Grand avenue about 500 feet west of Virginia street. The freight car one of several being switched, had been halted when the car ahead of it was derailed. Sgt. Reemts was born June 22, 1921, in Akron, Iowa. He lived there until joining the army in 1940. He had lived in Sioux City the past two years. He saw considerable combat duty in the Pacific area during World War 2. He was a member of Monahan Post, American Legion. Survivors include the widow, next a son, Bruce; his mother, Mrs. Anna Reemts; a brother, Arden, and a sister, Mrs. Esther Halweg, all of Sioux City. Funeral services for Sgt. Russell J. Reemts were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in Immanuel Lutheran church in this city, conducted by Pastor David J. Roy. Miss Lula Claassen, of Sioux City, sang. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Sgt. Reemts was awarded the Presidental Citation for his services in the U. S. Army Air Corps in New Guinea and other points in the Paific area in World War II, and also received two battle stars.
