MILLER, KILLED IN ACTION A memorial service held Sunday afternoon i the Methodist Church for Staff Sergeant Wesley Robert Miller, was largely attended by friends and relatives who gathered there to pay their last respects to the war help who gave his life in his fight that they may continue to enjoy the blessing of a democracy. Sergeant Miller was killed in action in defense of his country in Tunisia, North Africa, on February 2, The message from the U. S. W. Department telling of his death was received here February 27, by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller. The funeral sermon here Sunday afternoon was by the Rev. E. M. Buehler of the Methodist Church, and prayer was offered by the Rev. F. W. Thompson, pastor of the Presbyterian Chruch, who also read the scripture lesson. Music for the service was by a quartet, composed of J. H. Todd, H. H. Nordyke, F. L. Means, and H. A. Eno, with Mrs. J. L. Wheeler at the organ. Silent Tribute At the conclusion of the sermon, the audience stood and sang, "America" which was followed by a short period of silent tribute preceding the benediction. The following account of Sergeant Miller's life was read at the memorial service: Wesley Robert Miller was born in Villisca, Iowa, December 4, 1916. His childhood was spent on a farm near Villisca except for sic years in Minnesota. His parents moved to Villisca in 1929. Wesley attended the Villisca Schools and was a member of the Methodist Sunday School. He joined the local military company on November 25, 1932, serving in the IN. G. as a private until February 10, 1941, when he was made Corparal. He accompanied the Co. F. unit to Camp Riley in June 1940 and left Villisca for Camp Claiborne, La., on March 2, 1941 to complete his training. He ws unite din marriage with Miss Wilma Strain of Nodaway on Mary 23, 1941 and to this union a son, Robert Wesley was born. Wesley left the United States on April 29,1942, for overseas duty and saw active service as a Staff Sergeant in North Africa til the time of his death on February 2, 1943. He leaves his wife and a son of Nodaway, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller of Villisca, his sisters, Mrs. James Wolfe of Akron, Ohio and Mrs. Robert Swallow of Riverside, California, and may other relatives in this vicinity. Wesley was a Staff Sergeant in Company F during World War II and was killed in action in northern Africa on February 2, 1942, being the first soldier killed from Montgomery County.
