Born in Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Norman and Cassie (Young) Rafuse. Following graduation from Mount Allison Academy in 1912, he became general manager of his father's business, J.N. Rafuse and Sons, a ship-building company on the LaHave River. Read More	Funeral Service Thursday for Stanley S. Rafuse, 86 Halifax Herald Stanley S. Rafuse, 86, of Bridgewater, died Wednesday, January 15, 1980, at Shoreham Village, Chester. Born in Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Norman and Cassie (Young) Rafuse. Following graduation from Mount Allison Academy in 1912, he became general manager of his father's business, J.N. Rafuse and Sons, a ship-building company on the LaHave River. He was associated with shipbuilding in Salmon River and the John Etherington Company in Shelburne. During the Second World War, with Warren Robar, he built several landing craft and barges for the Royal Canadian Navy and in 1924 founded Rafuse Motors Ltd., Bridgewater, which he operated for fifty years. He was instrumental in organizing the Federation of Automobile Dealers of Canada and served as president in 1949-50. He was a past president of the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association. He was a past president of the Nova Scotia Liberal Association; a director of Acadia Gas Engines Ltd., and the Lunenburg Milling Company. He served on the bord of directors of the Eastern and Chartered Trust Company; the Board of Regents of Mount Allison University and the Lunenburg Advisory Board of the Canada Permanent Trust Company. In 1974,he was presented with a plaque for distinguished service by the Navy League of Canada for his forty years as president of the Bridgewater Sea Cadets and his service on the Board of the Navy League Mainland Division. He was an honourary member of the Bridgewater Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was chairman of Victory Loans for Lunenburg county during the Second World War, served on the Lunenburg Municipal Council and was twice president of the Bridgewater Board of Trade. He was a life member of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, and a past president of the Bridgewater Kiwanis and golf and curling clubs. He was also a member of the Halifax Curling Club and twice led Nova Scotia's entry in the MacDonald Briar Bonspiel. He was a member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, the LaHave River Yacht Club and the Halifax Club. He was a member of the Bridgewater United Church, secretary of the Session for twenty years and a member of the Official Board of the church. He was a 60 year member of Acadia Lodge No. 39, AF and AM. He is survived by his wife, the former Rita Durling; a daughter, Audrie (Mrs. Donald A. Mahon), Halifax; a son, Laurier (Bud), Bridgewater; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers and six sisters. The body is at Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. fro mthe Bridgewater United Church, Rev. Paul Cumming officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoreham Village Senior Citizens Association or the Bridgewater United Church.
