Mrs. Stella Grass, 89 01/27/1860 - 04/28/1949 Dies at Griffithsville, WV Mrs. Stella Grass, 89, member of a prominent business family of Lincoln County, died yesterday at 7 A.M. in her home at Griffithsville, WV. She was the widow of Thomas J. Grass, who was appointed cashier of the Oilfield National Bank at Griffithsville, when it was organized in 1908. The bank was later merged with another in Hamlin, WV. Mrs. Grass was born in Franklin County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Peyton R. and Malinda Jane Oxley Wigginton. Her parents moved to West Virginia when she was eight years old and she had lived here since. Surviving are two sons, Frank E. Grass and Roy of Griffithsville; two daughters, Miss Marjorie Grass at home and Mrs. Bert Stowers of Waldo, Fla.; three half-brothers, M. D. Goode, Griffithsville, WV; Henry Goode of Huntington and George Goode of Illinois; four half-sisters, Mrs, Martha Huston, and Mrs. Virgie Wilkerson, both of Huntington; Mrs. Ella Henderson, Barboursville, WV and Mrs. Florence Ashworth, Ashland, KY. Service will be at 2 P.M. tomorrow in Eden Baptist Church at Griffithsville with Rev. A. S. Kelly and Rev. Lloyd Cosby, officiating. Burial will be in the May Cemetery at Griffithsville, The body will remain in the Johnson & Knootz Mortuary at Hamlin, WV until one hour before the service when it will be taken to the church. (Lincoln Journal Hamlin, WV) STELLA FRANCES WIGGINTON GRASS 2005 , Griffithsville, Lincoln County, West Virginia Stella Frances Wigginton was born in Franklin County, Virginia on Jan. 27, 1860. She was the daughter of Peyton Richard and Malinda Jane Oxley Wigginton. Peyton Richard Wigginton was wounded in the Civil War and died when Stella was two years old. Her Mother, Malinda Jane (Jenny) Oxley Wigginton, married William Patrick Goode sometime before 1867. Stella came to Griffithsville, Lincoln County, West Virginia (located on the headwaters of Middle Fork of Mud River and was so called in honor of Alexander Griffith, who was one of the first owners of land) from Franklin County, Virginia, November 1868. She was then eight years old. She and her family came in a covered wagon drawn by three horses. They brought furniture in the wagon to set up housekeeping there. The pots and pans hung under the wagon and made a merry jingle on the way. The distance traveled was about 300 miles, and it took them two weeks to make the trip. They spent the first night in an abandoned house, but the rest of the journey they spent the nights in people's homes. They came to her uncle and aunt, John Allen and Rebecca Frances ‘Fannie' Oxley King's farm on Sugartree Creek, Griffithsville, W Va. The bottom land on and near her uncle's farm was covered with Sugar Maple Trees, and for that reason, the creek was named Sugartree. When Mrs. Grass told her neighbors in Virginia that she was coming to Lincoln County, the neighbor replied, "I would hate to go to a place that was named for so mean a man as Abraham Lincoln". She later became Mrs. Tom J. Grass. Stella married Thomas Jefferson Grass on 27 Mar 1879, in Lincoln County, WV. Tom was born 03 Feb 1856 and grew up in the Davis Trace Fork of Mud River area, Lincoln County, West Virginia. He was a farmer, teacher and the assistant cashier of the first bank in Lincoln County, The Oil Field National Bank, established in 1908 at Griffithsville, WV. He was a member of the Baptist church for forty years, a deacon, and belonged to the Odd Fellow Lodge No. 195. Stella became a member of the Eden Baptist Church in 1880. She and Tom first lived in a cabin on the Tom Roberts Farm near Davis Trace Fork. Next they moved to a farm on Sugartree that was previously owned by Joe Hager. They then moved to Huntington, WV, for a short time and finally bought a farm in Griffithsville across the creek from the Old K. T. Spurlock General Store. This property was in Stella's name and her son, Roy, and grandson, Dick, later built houses on the farm. Tom died suddenly at his home on 19 Oct 1932, of a heart attack. He was 76 years old, seemingly in his usual good health and listening to the radio when the attack struck him. Stella died at her home on 28 Apr 1949, at the age of 89. They are buried in the May Cemetery at Griffithsville, WV.
