He was a member of the Baptist church for forty years and was always active in church and community enterprises and for many years was a deacon in his church. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellow lodge No. 195 and was loved by all who knew him. He leaves besides his wife, four children, Margery Grass, Mrs. A. J. Stowers, Roy Grass, Frank Grass, one sister, Mrs. Emily Hall, two brothers, J. M. Grass and A. G. Grass to mourn his passing. Funeral services were held at the home, Friday morning at ten o'clock by Rev. C. C. Jarvis, pastor of the Hamlin M. E. Church, South, and interment occurred in the May cemetery at Griffithsville, WVa. (Lincoln Journal Hamlin, WV) Lincoln County West Virginia Biography of Thomas Jefferson GRASS Thomas Jefferson Grass, a teacher and farmer in Union district, Lincoln county, was born in this county, February 3, 1856, and his parents, Peter and Melinda (Spurlock) Grass, settled on Trace fork of Mud River, about sixty years ago, when this part of the country was a wilderness, inhabited principally by wolves, panthers and bears. In Lincoln county, March 27, 1879, Thomas J. Grass and Stella Frances Wigington were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, and their home has been brightened by two children: Margie, born August 13, 1880; Berta, Apr 4, 1882. Mrs. Grass joined the Missionary Baptist Chunth in 1880. She was born in Franklin county, Virginia, January 27, 1860, and her parents are Peyton Richard and Malinde Jane (Oxley) Wigington. Thomas J. Grass has been a most successful teacher of public schools in Lincoln county for seven years and is respected by all in the community in which he lives. His address is Griffithsville, Lincoln county, West Virginia. He was a farmer, teacher and the assistant cashier of the first bank in Lincoln County, The Oil Field National Bank, established in 1908 at Griffithsville, WV. He was a member of the Baptist church for forty years, a deacon, and belonged to the Odd Fellow Lodge No. 195. He married Stella Frances Wigginton on 27 Mar 1879, in Lincoln County, WV. • Stella Frances Wigginton was born in Franklin County, Virginia on 27 Jan 1860. She came to Griffithsville, WV, November 1868, when she was eight years old with her step-father, William Patrick Goode, and mother, Malinda Jane "Jenny" Oxley Wigginton Goode, in a covered wagon drawn by three horses. The distance traveled was about 300 miles, and it took them two weeks to make the trip. They came to the home of her uncle and aunt, John Allen and Rebecca Frances "Fannie" Oxley King, on Sugartree Creek, Griffithsville, WV. • Tom and Stella first lived in a cabin on the Tom Roberts Farm near Davis Trace Fork. Next, they moved to a farm on Sugartree that was previously owned by Joe Hager. They then moved to Huntington, WV for a short time and finally bought a farm in Griffithsville across the creek from the Old K. T. Spurlock General Store. This property was in Stella's name and her son, Roy, and grandson, Dick, later built houses on the farm. • Tom died suddenly at his home on 19 Oct 1932, of an apparent heart attack. He was 76 years old, seemingly in his usual good health and listening to the radio when the attack struck him. Stella died at her home on 28 Apr 1949, at the age of 89.
