The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the Springdale Friends church and interment was in the Springdale cemetery. page 6 The barn on the Wm. H. Phelps farm was struck by lightning last Thursday night and was completely destroyed by fire. The barn was filled with hay and some stock was also burned. A number of the neighbors turned out, but it was impossible to save the building. It was feared for a time that other buildings might also burn but the efforts of those present and the heavy rain that was falling aided much. There was great fear that the house might also be in the path of the fire, where the wife and mother was at death's door and who died on the Sunday night following. The death of Mrs. W. H. Phelps occurred at her late home on Sunday night, Aug. 22. The deceased had reached the age of 81 years. She had been ill for a number of years, five of which she had been bedfast. Her suffering at times was intense but she was always patient and bore her affliction with much fortitude. Her interests were much confined to her home and her family. She was a great reader and many hours were passed in this way during the long illness. She is survived by her husband and six children who were with her in her last hours with the exception of her daughter Mrs. Orpha Brunsvold, who lives in North Dakota, but who was present for the funeral services which occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The sympathy of the community is extended to those bereaved. page 7 Susan A. Phelps, wife of W. H. Phelps, was born in Iowa township, Cedar county, Iowa, in the year 1845, and passed away Aug. 23, 1926, at her home near Springdale, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 8 days. She was the mother of ten children, four having preceded her in death, three in infancy and Stewart A. three years ago. There remains to mourn her loss, the husband and following children: Gilbert H., Martin L., and John D. at home; Mrs. Foster Maxson of Springdale, Iowa; Mrs. E. O. Burnvold of Ray, N. Dak.; and Mrs. Harvey Harold of Muscatine, Iowa. All were present at the time of her death except Mrs. E. O. Burnsvold. There are fourteen grandchildren besides other relatives and a host of friends. She will be greatly missed in the home for she was always full of kindness and thoughtfulness for others, although she was an invalid for a number of years. She was cheerful and always an inspiration to all who visited her for she was a great reader of all good and worth while things, a lover of flowers and poetry, and a thorough student of the Bible. The hour was never too late nor the night too dark for her to refuse to help anyone in time of sickness of need.
