Susan Christine Schulz was born August 2, 1919 near Freeman, SD to George and Helen (Stoller) Schamber, one of eleven children, and one of two sets of twins. She was baptized Sept. 7, 1919 by Pastor W. Hodde, and received her education in a parochial school near Freeman under Professor Paul Klawitter. She was confirmed Feb. 25, 1934 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Freeman. Her confirmation verse, Matt. 6:33 states “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” She later moved into Freeman with her parents and worked at the former Schamber Store until her marriage to Arnold G. Schulz on May 14, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Freeman. They shared life’s joys and sorrows for 40 years and six months on the Schulz farm near the Clayton community. She enjoyed the farm animals, making easy friends with all the farm dogs and cats. Her garden always filled row upon row of canned goods, and her meals were always enjoyed by family and friends. Her church was the center of much of her life. She, along with her family, was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Clayton. She served as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher for a number of years. She attended many Bible classes, always eager to learn more about the God of her faith. She participated in choirs, LWML and held several offices in the LWML. Susan and Arnold moved into Emery in 1984. Arnold passed away in early 1985, and Susan continued to live there until her son Lynn’s death in 2006, when she moved to Broken Bow, NE. She continued to attend services in church and at the Heritage Hall Community room in Broken Bow where she encouraged other residents to participate as well. She loved music--supporting her children and grandchildren as they participated in lessons, band, all-state chorus, and college music groups. She attended Janelle’s senior organ recital at college, and church services and weddings that she played for and enjoyed listening as Lynn participated in the Swiss Choral Society and sang at weddings and other functions. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arnold, her in-laws Clara and Elmer Schulz, sisters and spouses Ella (Oscar) Walz, Helen (Hugo) Dubs, Loretta (Del) Rice Wilson, Lillie Schamber, Hedwig Schamber, twin brother Henry (Lorraine), and brothers and spouses Ted (Mary), Edgar (Ruth), Max (Kathryn), Elmer (Lorraine) several nephews and brothers-in-laws Marlin Schulz, Martin Schulz and Walter (Lois) Schulz, also beloved son, Lynn. Left to celebrate the life that was hers are daughter and son-in-law Janelle and Norm Custer of Broken Bow, NE, daughter-in-law Jolene Schulz of Mitchell, SD, grandchildren Melanie (Shannon) Jordan of Oshkosh, NE, Brent (Katie) Custer of Broken Bow, NE, Sherri (Eric) Booth of Erie, CO, Adam (Lindsay) Schulz of Mitchell, SD, Nathan (Jessica) Schulz of Emery, SD; great-grandchildren Sean (Kylee) Sterkel and Destry (Mandy) Sterkel, Savannah and Dalton Jordan, Emery, Brynn and Molly Custer and Shjon and Lukas Booth, Noah Schulz, Clayton Schulz, and great-great grandson Dax Sterkel, many nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Gladys (Elmer) Schamber. - Bittner Funeral Chapel
