Description	:	Susan was born 22 Sep 1882 in Sugarhouse, Utah but moved with her family at the age of four to Plano, Idaho. As children they walked one and a half miles to school. Read More	Susan was born 22 Sep 1882 in Sugarhouse, Utah but moved with her family at the age of four to Plano, Idaho. As children they walked one and a half miles to school. One night when Susan was walking to Aunt Lisa's to get milk in the winter she nearly froze. She had no mittens. Coming up a ditch bank she stumbled and cut her leg. When she was thirteen years old she started working for $1.50 a week. One week for pay she received a baby lamb. Her older sister, Jennie, married in 1894. Her mohter died in 1898. Susan stayed home and looked after her younger brothers and sisters. Their father went to Salt Lake and married again the next year so Susan and her brothers lived with Jennie. She married William Albert Lucas Jan 2 1899 at age seventeen. Her wedding day was a stormy one and the snow was deep. Susans two brothers came to Stavely, Alberta, Canada with the Mormon trek about 1902. In 1904 the Jone's and Luca's joined them. Leonard and William came in early spring by box car with machinery, cattle and their worldley poseisions. In June, Jennie and Susan and their children came by train . It was raining hard when they arrived in Stavely June 16. The station consisted of only a boxcar beside the rails. With much inconvenience they were taken to the home of William Henry Chandler. Leonard received his homestead right away and William received his the next February. In the meantime William built a one room home on Leonards land. On April 1, they moved their home to the homestead and built onto it two years later. One day William had to go to the hills but returned sooner than expected. Susan wasn't going to let him in. She said whe was sure scared. There were no fences so the range cattle wandered all over. One day they came to the house when Susan wa outside. She had to climb onto a haystack unil they went away. They drove sixty miles to Cardston for a Stake Conference in a buggy. They would be gone for a week. In 1915 they saw the Cardston Temple under construction but upon returning home found their crop hailed out. Another time Susan was driving a new buggy to Relief Society when the harness broke on a steep hill. No one was hurt but the buggy was smashed. In 1924 Susan and William and family, except Albert went by train to Cardston to the Temple to be sealed. In 1931 they bought their first car and were able to go more often to the Temple. When their family was grown and gone, their aim was one trip per month to the Temple. They would stay the night, usually with Smiths and go to five sessions. Susan worked in Relief Society for 32 years serving in evey capacity. She was treasuser 1905-1907 in the Pine Coulee Branch. She walked to the meetings during these early years. She carried the baby and the small children walked the two and half miles. Susan also took part in community activities. She was school scecretaty for years and many teachers found refuge in her home. In 1946 William and Susan sold their farm and moved to the town of Stavely. In later years Susan knited many mittens for her grandchildren. She crocheted seven spider pattern bedspreads and helped Mary start hers. Susan made many quilts being especially good at crazy patch ones. The local store would let her have the suit sample pieces for quilts. Susan was kind hearted and considerate of others, especially those sick and in distress. She visited them, lending a helping hand and sharing foods and supplies with them. She was a good listener to the troubles of others and no ones secrets were betrayed by her. The last ten years of her life she had failing health and diminishing eyesight but she bore her suffering silently. Susan and William enjoyed visiting their childrens homes and having them visit their home. Susan and her sister Jennie were faithful Relief Society visiting teachers around town right up to the time she entered the hospital. Susan passed away peacefully at the age of seventy-two years in the Clareshom Hospital with William by her side, and was laid to rest in Stavely Cemetery.
