Funeral This Morning. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ...Apparently as well as usual Monday night, Mrs. Susan Nelson was found dead in her bed at her home in the east part of Franklin Tuesday morning by her grandson, Paul Greenleaf, and a neighbor, Mrs. G.P. Spence. Mr. Greenleaf had returned from Chicago Monday night, and went to see his grandmother the following morning. A knock on the door failing to bring a response, he supposed she was still sleeping, and sat on the porch reading, deciding to wait until Mrs. Nelson should arise. Seeing him, Mrs. Spense stated that there must be something wrong, as Mrs. Nelson was up and around early every morning, and suggested that they investigate. Raising the hook on the screendoor by means of a wire they went in, and found Mrs. Nelson in her bed, dead. She had apparently been up and later returned to her bed, as she was partially dressed. ...Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the Hutchins funeral home in charge of Rev. J.H. Beitel, and interment was in Greenwood cemetery. ...Susan jane Robertson was born January 11, 1854 in Huntington county Pennsylvania, and died in Franklin, Nebraska, August 6, 1935, aged 81 years, 6 months, and 25 days. She was married to Samuel Walters in Iowa, and one child, Cora Belle, was born to this union, dying in May 1891. They homesteaded in Smith county, Kansas about 1870, and after one year her husband died. This homestead is still in the family. ...April 4, 1874, she married to Joseph W. Nelson at Harlan, Kansas, and to this union six children were born, Maggie E., who died in April 1880, and the surviving children are: Wilford Lee Nelson of Reamsville, Kansas; Mrs. Minnie E. Greenleaf and Mrs. Lena Mae Garrett of Franklin; Nina Mabel Rutter of Kensington, Kas.; and Ulva Nelson of Kansas City, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson moved to Franklin 26 years ago, and this had since been the home. (Mr. Nelson preceeded her in death.) ...Mrs. Greenleaf, who is on a motor trip in the west, was last heard from in Idaho, with her daughter, Mrs. Brainerd Chalfon, and Mr. Chalfon, and as they had planned to go on to Washington, and possibly California, had not been reached at last reports. .....From Franklin, NE newspaper of August 8, 1935.
