While it was known that Mrs. Hamilton had been in poor health for several weeks there had been no reason to anticipate a fatal ending. When she rose Friday morning, she expressed herself as feeling better than usual having had a refreshing sleep during the night. Mr. Hamilton left her at the breakfast table to go to his office in good spirits and apparently more comfortable than she had been for some weeks previous. A few minutes later he was recalled to the house and found her in a dying condition. All was done that could be to enable her to retain her hold on life, but death came at about 10 o'clock a.m. Mrs. Hamilton, whose maiden name was Susan Grace, was born September 21, 1852, in County Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of John and Julia Grace. When she was four years of age her parents migrated to America, settling first in New York and later came to LaSalle, Illinois. In 1865 they came to Iowa, locating at what was then Montana, where the city of Boone is now located. On September 2nd, 1874, she was married at Boone to Chas. F. Hamilton, who survives her, and in the fall of the same year they came to Carroll, where they have since made their home. Three children have been born to them. Two sons, J.B. and H.J., survive, the former now living in Sioux City and the latter in Carroll. Grace, the only daughter, died seven years ago and her grave is beside that in which her mother has just been laid to rest. A niece, Miss Susie Carver, has for several years made her home with them and has had a daughter's love and has returned a daughter's affection. Of two sisters and one brother, the only survivor is her sister, Mary, now Mrs. Ed Lucey, of Carroll. One sister, Mrs. Catherine Carver, and a brother James preceded her in death. In the brief limits of a newspaper article it is impossible to recount in any adequate way the life record of a good and noble woman, in the nearly forty years of her residence in Carroll. Mrs. Hamilton has endeared herself to all who have come to know her, by a life of constant helpfulness and unselfishness. Faithful to all the duties of a wife and mother, loyal to the church in which she was born and reared, her love, sympathy and helpfulness went out beyond the limits of her family and church so that her life was a blessing and benefaction to the entire community. To her it was scarcely sacrifice to give her time and labor to promoting the happiness and welfare of others, for in so doing she found her greatest joy. The children of the neighborhood in which she lived for many years loved her because they found in "Aunt Susie" a friend and sympathiser in all their troubles and in all their pleasures. Old and young found her one in whom they could always safely confide and whose counsel always inspired hope and dispelled doubt and discouragement. It is in the family circle, however, that her rare worth was most fully known and where her loss will be most fully felt. The husband, whose true helpmate she has been for so many years of increasing mutual confidence and affection, will miss her most of all. Yet in their sorrow, the rich memory of her noble life should bring balm and consolation to those who mourn. The funeral took place Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church of which she was a member and was conducted by Rev. Father P.F. Farrelly, of Emmetsburg, a former pastor of St. Joseph's, assisted by Father Finnegan, of Sioux City. The former preached the funeral sermon and the latter conducted the service at the grave. There was a very large attendance and the floral tributes from those who had known and loved Mrs Hamilton were many and beautiful. The Ladles Sodality and Doughters of Isabella, of both which organizations Mrs. Hamilton was a member, attended the funeral in a body and followed the remains to their beloved sister to the grave. The Knights of Columbus and the county officials also expressed their sympathy with the sorrowing husband by their presence in the sad procession. The following relatives and friends from other places were here to attend the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Hamilton, of Council Bluffs. Mr. and Mrs. Mart Hamilton, of Des Moines. Mrs. J.D. Grace, of Boone, with their daughters, Julia, Margaret, Blanche, and Mrs. Harry Gray. Mr. and Mrs M.J. Riley, of Boone, with their daughters, Grace and Marie. Mrs. Riley is a sister of Mr. Hamilton. Mrs. Margaret Deacon, of Des Moines. Mrs. Marie Conroy, of Arlon. Mrs. Mahoney and Mrs. Murphy of Boone. Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Creed, of Spring Valley, Illinois. Mrs. J.E. Erwin, of Chicago.
