Mr. Hamilton had been confined to his home and later to the hospital, for many months prior to his death, which came as a relief to his long-continued sufferings. In 1915 while serving as sheriff of Carroll county, he was taken seriously ill, and after that time was unable to attend to his duties for any great period of time, despite heroic efforts on his part to be up and around. The serious affliction which robbed him of his usefulness was incurred in the line of service to the people of the county, but he always lived in the hope of again regaining his usual health. Charles F. Hamilton was born in Clinton county, Iowa, September 12, 1852, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton, natives of Ireland. He grew to young manhood in Clinton county, and later spent two years in Boone before coming to Carroll county in 1874. He received his early education in an old-fashioned log school house, and later learned the trade of blacksmithing, which he followed until in 1906. In that year he was elected sheriff of Carroll county and held the office through five successive terms, the nature of its services being such that the people demanded that he retain the office for a longer time than most men are permitted to serve. He retired in 1916, after the condition of his health became such that he could not be about town, and since that time has been confined to his home and to the hospital, having been bedfast most of the time. To his official record must be added a service of nine years in the capacity of city marshal of Carroll, the manner in which he filled that office furnishing the stepping stone to a position of like nature with the county. Mr. Hamilton was married on September 2, 1874, to Miss Susie Grace. Three children, John V., Robert J., and Grace were born to them. The latter died at the age of 21 years while Robert passed away on Novemher 19 of last year, a victim of the influenza epidemic. Mrs. Hamilton died in January, 1914, and after that time, Mr. Hamilton made his home with his son, Robert, until the death of the latter last fall. He was a life-long and steadfast member of the Catholic church, and also held membership in the Knights of Columbus. The funeral was held at St. Joseph's church last Saturday morning, when a vast concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respects to their friend and neighbor and to a worthy citizen. As a mark of respect the county offices and business houses were closed during the services.
