Swenson was born in Skone Sweden, Dec. 7th, 1843 and died at North Star, near Fullerton, Nebr. on Dec. 15th, 1911, aged 68 years and 8 days. When 9 years of age, the deceased came with his parents to the United States, locating near Knoxville, Ill., where the boy grew to manhood. In 1871, with his young wife, he moved to Page Co., Iowa, where they lived for 21 years. Moving from Iowa in 1892, he came with his family to Nance Co., where he purchased land, and where he has proven himself a valuable pioneer. Mr. Swenson was a soldier, having enlisted Aug. 5th, 1862, when but 19 years of age, sharing the dangers and hardships of war with Company E. 83rd Ill. Infantry Volunteers until mustered out at the close of the war. Mr. Swenson was ever loyal to his adopted country. He loved the old soldiers and often spoke of those memorable war days, but being of a reserved disposition, he said but little of the part which he, himself, had taken in the great struggle. However, those under whose command he served, said this of him, "He is industrious, competent; giving close attention to duty, Honest, temperate and always to be relied upon, as he is always at his post." March 16th, 1867 at Knoxville, Ill., Mr. Swenson was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Olson. To this union 11 children were born, Fred W. of South Dakota, Chas. H. of Louisiana; Mrs. Stella O. Ericksen of Villisca, Iowa; Albert E., Geo. M., Anthony O., Mrs. Ester F. Rumsey, Milton A., Joseph N., Reuben J., of Nance Co. Nebr., are living. John Edward, deceased. The good wife passed on to her reward 7 years ago and was greatly missed by the husband, who sorrowed in hope. At the age of 15, the deceased was confirmed and united with the Swedish Lutheran Church at Knoxville, Ill., of which church he was a faithful member until Dec. 8th, 1895 when the United Evangelical church was organized at the North Star school house, he became one of its charter members, and while never an active leader in the work of the church, nevertheless, he always maintained a love and reverence for God and the church, and in a humble and inconspicuous way, stood ever with an influence for righteousness. Beside the 10 children, there are 18 grandchildren, 1 brother, and 2 sisters who mourn. Mr. Swenson will be missed by the church, by the old soldiers, and by friend and neighbor, who have learned to know and to love him. But he lived well and he died in peace and hope. Funeral conducted by the writer, from the North Star church, Tuesday Dec. 19th, assisted by Rev. Randolph of Belgrade, and Rev. Stimson of Fullerton, former pastors. Text, Heb. 11:16.
