She went by her middle name. +++ The Carroll Times, IA, Thursday, October 4, 1906, pg. 5, col. 5 DEATH PARTED AGED COUPLE Married Life of Almost Sixty Years Broken by Wife's Demise---Mr. and Mrs. Peter Roth's a Long Happy Wedded Life The funeral of Mrs. Peter Roth from Sacred Heart Church, Templeton, Iowa, last Thursday, marked close of a wedded life of a duration and felicity that is truly edifying in these days of hasty marriages and precipitate divorces. There lacked only a little over a year to round out sixty years of love and devotion such as was contemplated by Him who elevated marriage to the dignity of a sacrament. Sybilla Stirman was born in Germany, March 24, 1822, she had therefore reached the age of eighty-four years, six months and one day. She came to the United States with her parents in early youth. They came to Clayton county, Iowa, settling at Guttenberg, then a little hamlet beyond which west of the mighty Mississippi then stretched the unbroken forest or the boundless prairie. It was there that she joined her hand and heart with Peter Roth. Again it will appear how primitive the conditions from the fact that they had to descend the ice bound river and travel to Potsi, Wis, as the nearest point where a Catholic cleryman could be found to pronounce the church's blessing on their union. They resided at Guttenberg, Iowa, continuing until coming to Roselle township in this county in 1881. They lived on their farm there for some years, but for the past 19 years have resided in Templeton, to be able to attend daily divine services. It was thus that departed prepared for the Creator's call, and she was ready to answer without fear and trembling. Besides her aged husband departed is survived by the following sons and daughters: John Roth, one of the pioneers and most respected citizens of Roselle township, also Frank X. Roth of the same locality; Mina, Mrs. Frank Kipper, Guttenberg, Iowa; Mina, Mrs. John Mut, Glen Haven, Wis.; Elizabeth, Mrs. Fred Kann, Guttenberg, Iowa; Mary, Mrs. Frank Mosman, Lindsay, Tex.; Josephine, Mrs. Wm. Neu, Templeton, Iowa. One son, Peter Roth, that died July 21, 1879, and another son, Joseph, some 11 years ago. One daughter, Anna, died in early youth. Departed is also mourned by numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Her surviving children were all present at the funeral, excepting Mrs. Frank Mosman who could not get here through delays owing to washouts on the rail roads. She arrived Saturday, accompanied by her daughter, Celia, Mrs. Robert Lewald. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever held from the Catholic church at Templeton. Mother Roth was beloved and esteemed and neighbors and friends of the family gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects to the departed and offer sympathy to the living. The Times joins in the general condolence. +++ Guttenberg Press, IA, Friday, September 28, 1906, pg. 7, col. 4 Mrs. Peter Roth passed away at her home at Templeton, in Carroll county Monday, aged 82 years. Deceased was one of Guttenberg's earliest residents and resided in this township until about fifteen years ago, when she and her husband removed to Templeton. Death was due to infirmities of old age. The funeral was held at 10:00 o'clock yesterday forenoon. She is survived by her aged husband and seven children, namely, Mesdames Franz Kipper, Sr., and Fred Kann of this township and Mrs. Minnie Matt of Glen Haven, John, Frank and Mrs. Josephine Neu, Templeton and Mrs. Mary Mossmann of Texas. Mesdames Kipper, Kann and Matt left here Tuesday evening to be present at the funeral.
