April 28, 1910 - Newell Mirror - Sylvester Ellis died at his home north of Newell, Iowa, Monday, Apr. 25. 1910, aged 60 years 2 mos. and 5 days. Sylvester Ellis was a son of Orville B. and Mary Ann Ellis. He was born near Sugar Grove, Warren county, Pa., Feb. 20, 1850. He moved with his parents to Green county, Wis., when he was two and a half years of age. He was married to Miss Lucinda Loomis Oct 15, 1871. The following spring he moved to Iowa, settling first on a farm in Coon township. A few years later he moved to Providence township where he resided with his family until fourteen years ago when he moved with his family to the farm three miles northwest of Newell where he resided at the time of his death. Mr. Ellis has been in very poor health for the past three years. He suffered from some disease of the stomach or liver which baffled the skill of all the physicians who attended him. He was a patient sufferer throughout his long illness, and when the silent messenger came to his bedside he met him as he had lived, smilingly and bravely. We never dreamed that we would be called upon to pay the final tribute to our old-time friend, Vet. Ellis, so soon. We hoped, almost against hope, that his health might be recovered and his life spared to his family. We have known Mr. Ellis for twenty years and esteemed him highly for his many excellent traits of character, he was a good man in his home, a good citizen in the community. He is free from pain but there is a vacant chair in the family circle, and we shall miss his familiar figure on the streets, his kindly smile. He has gone to his long home, leaving tender memories to be cherished by his children. Mr. Ellis leaves to mourn their loss three sons and three daughters: Orville, Lorin and Jay Ellis, Mrs. Minnie Keeny, of Nemaha, and Mrs. Esth r James and Miss Effie Ellis, of this place; a grandson, Gladwyn Ellis, also of Newell: two brothers. Lorin Ellis, of Yates Center, Kas., and Harrison Ellis, of Storm Lake; one sister, Mrs. Ellen McCrellis, of South Wayne, Wis., besides many other relatives. The funeral services were held at Mr. Ellis home Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.E. Prior. The bearers were John Wart, F.A. McFarlitie, A. Post, Henry Williams, J.B. Lindsay and Herman Schulz. Appropriate music was rendered by a choir cemposed ot Mrs. J.O. Ervin, Miss Leone Anderson, F.G. RedQeld and C.H. Redfield. Lovely cut flowers expressed in some degree the sympathy of relatives and friends. The attendance of friends and neighbors was very large. There were over forty teams in the funeral procession. The interment took place in Newell cemetery.
