He was born on Oct. 20, 1923, in Vesuvius (Rockbridge County), a son of the late William A. and Tessie (Koogler) Austin. Mr. Austin was a U.S. army veteran of World War II. He retired as president of the Bank of Rockbridge in June l986, where he had worked for more than 40 years. He also served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Bank. He was born on Oct. 20, 1923, in Vesuvius (Rockbridge County), a son of the late William A. and Tessie (Koogler) Austin. Mr. Austin was a U.S. army veteran of World War II. He retired as president of the Bank of Rockbridge in June l986, where he had worked for more than 40 years. He also served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Bank. He was a member of Vesuvius Baptist Church. He was a Master Mason and had served as secretary of the Masonic Lodge at Raphine. He was a member of the Greenville Lodge No 0111, A.F.&A.M. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Pauline Chittum; a daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Michael Hemp of Middlebrook; two grandchildren, Jared and Amanda Hemp; two sisters, Mrs. Hewett (Hazel) Brooks of Stuarts Draft and Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Hays of Vesuvius; and a brother Edgar Austin of Vesuvius. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Irene Snead, and four brothers, Andrew, Duncan, Pete, and Adair Austin. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Revs. Carson Riley and J. Russell Fleming. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 o'clock this evening in the Henry Funeral Home and at other times at the residence. The News Leader, Wed. Nov. 1, 1989 -------------------------
