Description	:	Sylvester Mills, a resident of Ridgefield, Washington for the last 77 years died of natural causes on April 25, 2000 at the age of 91. Survivors are his wife of 70 years, Elsie Mills at home; two daughters, Myrna Snead of Ridgefield, Washington and Connie Mills of Tacoma, Washington. He was preceded in death by sons, Carvel Mills in 1990 and an unnamed baby boy in 1953. He had three grandchildren, Gary Stansgar and Gerald Stansgar, both of Los Angeles, California and Gena West of Layton, Utah. He also had three great grandchildren; Charlee, Whitnee and Alec West, all of Layton, Utah. Mr. Mills was born in Fenter, Arkansas, on April 1, 1909. His family followed relatives to Ridgefield when he was 14. He was a football, baseball and basketball star at Ridgefield High School and graduated from there in 1929. After graduation he married Elsie Anderson , of La Center, Washington, and worked various jobs including Pendleton wheat harvests, building roads in Kalama and working for Bratlee Brothers Mill in Ridgefield. In 1936 he went to work for the Ridgefield Phone Company as their only installer/repairman, making him well known in the area as "The Phone Man". After an ice storm of 1950, the struggling company finally sold to "Ma Bell" and he went to work for them until retirement in 1974. His endeavors to save the phone company and restore service the the area residents was on factor in his being voted "1st Citizen" of Ridgefield in 1955. His other community activities included serving on the city council, being chief of the Fire Departmaent for two years and drill and safety instructor for the fire department for a good number of the 35 years of service with them. He designed and built the first "tanker" truck for Fire District #12. He was Scout Master for Ridgefield Troop #303 for 15 years, past Master of Ridgefield Masonic Lodge #237, a member of Eastern Star Chapter #182 and Father Advisor of Ridgefield Rainbow Girls, Assembly #89 for 15 years. Mr. Mills enjoyed bowling, gardening and playing cribbage. His love of life was attending, with his wife, sports and other activities of his three grandchidren. His grandchildren and later, his great grandchildren were truly the reason his world kept turning. We are very proud of him and he will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday April 28, 2000 at the Ridgefield Cemetery and a memorial service will follow at 4:00 M at Layne's Funeral Home in Battle Ground, Washington.
