Description	:	T. D. Batt was born in the 1770s in Baden, Germany -- probably in the the Freiburg district (in Eschbach or Tunsel) because that's where christening records for his son's family are. It is difficult to pinpoint his true date of birth because I couldn't find a definitive birth or christening record for him in Germany, and American records vary. In the 1870 census he was listed as 95 (b. 1775), his gravestone says 1777, and his calculated birthdate from the age given in his death record was Dec. 25, 1778. He was likely born at some time between 1775-1780, but without a birth record I can't get more definitive. Mr. Batt is listed as "Robert Batt" on the 1860 census of Defiance County and on his death record in Defiance County. (He was erroneously listed as "Joseph Batt," the name of his son, in 1870.) Despite being called Robert in those records, his gravestone clearly says "T. D. Batt." After looking at christening records in Eschbach & Tunsel and seeing the name Trudpert Bath several times, and because one of his great-grandsons was named Joseph Trubert Batt, I believe quite firmly that Mr. Batt's first name was Trubert. Not Robert. Family history word-of-mouth indicates that Mr. Batt's wife's name was Anna/Annie. However, as far as I can tell, she did not come to America with him, and I haven't been able to find any definitive proof of her name. I did find a christening record for a child of Trudpert Bath & Anna Lamb, in the right church, in the right timeframe -- and that sounds very likely, but I have no real proof. A Defiance County death record (#477) indicates that Robert Batt, a widowed farmer who was born in Germany, died on 26 Sep 1871 in Tiffin Twp. at age 92 years 9 months and 1 day. T. D. Batt has many, many descendants. His son Joseph had many children, and hundreds of people are descended from this family (including me!).
