He then... Read More	T. Manford Clark Thomas Manford Clark was born May 16, 1867 on a farm near Libertyville. He was the youngest son of Julius and Emaline Carson Clark. From the strong devotion to his parents, close companionship with his associates at Eagle school, and the Christian influence in Bethel church, he developed a strong character and deeply religious understanding which were the outstanding characteristics of his personality. He was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and lived a devout Christian life. He later attended Wolf’s Academy at Birmingham and Business College at Bloomfield. He then returned to the farm and on Oct. 10, 1894 he was married to Myra D. Ross at her father’s home near Birmingham. They resided for many years on the old farm that he had purchased from his father. To them were born three daughters, Ercile L. Griffin of Austin, Texas, Orpha L. Clay of Salem, Oregon, and Iva B. Clark of Wichita, Kansas. This treasure experience of happy life was shattered by the sudden death of the beloved wife and mother on March 7, 1904. Five years later he was married to Mrs. Cora Elliot of Birmingham, Iowa. To them was born one son Roscoe Melvin of Oklahoma City. Surviving him also are five grandchildren, Robert, Lorene and Shirley Griffin, William Clay and John Clark. Due to his love for thoroughbred animals, he became one of the counties most successful breeders in fine stock. With sacrifice and regret against his keen desire to educate his children, he left the farm home of many precious years and moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. Through his business and religious activities he became a beloved leader of his community. He was a Sunday school superintendent in his church and for three years directed the Sunday services at the state reformatory. Here he won the love and respect of the inmates. Following his retirement he resided with his children spending the last three years in Wichita with his youngest daughter. The closing period of his life was distinguished by his keen interest in his old friends, civic affairs, and religious and political trends. His spare time was occupied with writing articles from his rich experiences. He quietly passed away on Sept. 4, 1948. As a loving and devoted father, a loyal friend and brother, and most exemplary citizen, he shall be sadly missed by all who were privileged to know him. He was laid to rest in Maple Hill cemetery following beautiful services conducted by Rev. Crandall in Birmingham Methodist church on Sept. 7, 1948, with Lee Gallup, Carl Frieburg, Ralph Johnson, Van Dustin, Grover Johnston and Ralph Clark as bearers. Source: Van Buren Co.
