Description	:	Thelma A. Longenecker, 90, long-time resident of Abilene, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was born Feb. 26, 1926, at Abilene Hospital to Naomi P. (Gish) Sexton and Burton B. Sexton. She grew up south of Abilene and attended Abilene High School, where she graduated in 1943. Longenecker, 90, long-time resident of Abilene, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was born Feb. 26, 1926, at Abilene Hospital to Naomi P. (Gish) Sexton and Burton B. Sexton. She grew up south of Abilene and attended Abilene High School, where she graduated in 1943. The summer of 1943 and 1944 she attended Fort Hays Teachers College to get emergency certificates for one year each to teach rural schools Rich Valley and East Buckeye. Thelma enrolled at Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) the summer of 1945 and attended until 1947, finishing her junior year. As World War II was over, her “pen pal” Floyd Longenecker came marching home from his military service just in time for her February birthday in 1946. They were at college together the following fall term and became engaged in November 1946. Thelma A. Longenecker married Floyd H. Longenecker on Aug. 3, 1947, and the couple began their life together on their farm northeast of Abilene. They raised three children on this farm for nearly 12 years before deciding to move the family to Colorado Springs and later to Chipita Park, Colo. They returned to the Abilene area in 1980. She and her husband lived on their small acreage until the death of her husband in 2004, when she moved to Brown Memorial Home. In 2012 she moved to Colorado Springs to live with her son Kevin and his family. Thelma had worked as a secretary at Ute Pass Elementary in Chipita Park. She was a SRS Homemaker working with elderly in Abilene and Chapman areas as well as a Child Home Visitor for Dickinson County Health Department, visiting new mothers in the hospital and their homes. She even had a temp position as sheriff’s dispatcher in Abilene and found a new respect for Emergency Services and dispatchers. As a member of the Brethren In Christ Church while in Colorado and Kansas, Thelma taught Sunday school for many years and influenced many young people of various ages. She and her husband, Floyd, helped begin a new church in Colorado Springs and volunteered for building projects as a part of the Brethren In Christ Church Missions at the Navajo Mission in New Mexico, Lifeline Mission in San Francisco, a nursing facility in Colorado and a church building project in Venezuela. Survivors include two sons, Terry F. Longenecker (Terry) of Chandler, Ariz., and Kevin B. Longenecker (Candice) of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Lanise A. Cook (Mick) of rural Abilene; seven grandchildren, Mindy Sanchez (Ricardo) of Colorado Springs, Tambra Stuber (Lance) of Chandler, Josh Longenecker (Harmony) of Sarasota, Fla., Craig Cook (Becky) of Abilene, Lonnie Longenecker (Nelly) of Colorado Springs, Kristen Miller (Michael) of Abilene and Sarah Condreay (Jason) of Parker, Colo.; 20 great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; two sisters, Lorine Elberta and Glenna Veletta Kuntz; and four brothers, Everett B. Sexton, Ivan Clifton Sexton, Lloyd Dale Sexton and Carl Wesley Sexton. A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Chapman Church of the Nazarene. Family will gather at Livingston (Union) Cemetery for inurnment in the afternoon. The family of Thelma Longenecker is in charge of the memorial service and inurnment arrangements.
