Thelma, the 12-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jordan, who live on the Dr. Norman farm 2 miles west of the Norwegian church in South Salem township, was frightfully burned last evening. Her parents had gone to Eureka, Mrs. Jordan with the intention of remaining overnight with Mrs. Dave McNeill, and when her father drove up, the little girl opened the top of the hot stove to put in fuel and as she did so the blaze was blown out at the opening below and set fire to her dress. She did not discover it at first and went on about her work. In a moment the flames enveloped her form and in her fright she ran to the barn where her father was putting his team. He threw a blanket about her and smothered out the fire. Her clothing from her hips up was entirely burned from her body. Dr. Norman was called and rendered all the aid possible. Her age was given in last week as twelve – but friends of the family say she is but ten years old. 25 December 1913 obituary, Democratic Messenger, Eureka, KS, Thursday, p. 5: Thelma Jordan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Jordan of Salem, was born Oct. 10, 1904, died at the home of her parents, Friday, Dec. 19, 1913, age 9 years, 3 months and 9 days. Wednesday evening December 10, as little Thelma was kindling a fire in the stove her clothing caught fire and in a moment the flames enveloped her form. In her fright she ran to the barn where her father was at work, he threw a blanket about her and smothered out the fire but she was so severely burned that it was impossible for her to recover. All that was possible for medical skill and loving hands to do was done to relieve her suffering but to no avail, and at 5:30 Friday evening death came to release her. Many hearts are saddened by the death of this dear little girl, but upon the sorrowing parents, two brothers and one sister, who are left, the blow falls nearest. They have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. Funeral services held at the home at 11 o'clock Sunday morning conducted by Rev. E. T. Lundy. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
