DIES IN DENISON Was Prominent in Politics, Farm Circles, And in Public Life Hon. Theodore Blume, of Hanover Township, statesman, farmer, political leader, and Christian gentleman died at the Denison Hospital Sunday morning after a brief illness. His unexpected death came as a shock to his many friends and his death will be a severe loss to the community, especially to the farmers and the Farmers Union. He was a leader of men. His excellent education gave him an outlook upon like an a discernment that made him a champion of the things that tended to help mankind. He was a fluent and interesting talker, a debater who could present his side of a question lucidly and convincingly. He was slow to make up his mind and always studied a question from all sides, but once arriving at a conclusion of what was right, fought for what he believed best to the last ditch. In politics Mr. Blume affiliated with the Democratic party and was called many times to speak in behalf of his party. As a legislator he was a studious and painstaking lawmaker. Although a farmer, he delved deep into the important questions that came before the legislature and consistently was on the side of the people. In Farmers Union his ability was recognized and was many times signally honored by that organization. As a neighbor, friend, citizen, husband, and father he was true, loyal, and sincere and in his death Crawford County has lost much. The following contributed article is a complete story of his life and character: The Hon. Theodore Carl Blume, son of Char. T. Blume and his wife Amelia, nee Girard, was born in Marshall County, Illinois, on the 10th day of December, 1861. His ancestry on the mother's side may be traced back to the Huguenots, many of whom in the year 1572, because of the terrible ordeal of the night of St. Bartholomew, left France in haste and settled in various parts of Germany. Young Mr. Blume chose the teaching profession for his life work and to prepare himself for the estate, entered the Dexter Normal College, at Dexter, Iowa, where in 1881 he received the degree of Bachelor of Science. He then entered Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa. In the autumn of 1884 he began to teach, continuing so until the autumn of 1891 at which time he accepted a position in Greer College, Hoopston, Illinois, as an instructor in the Normal Department. He remained there until July, 1894, removing then to Dyersville, Iowa, to take charge of the public schools of that city. On Aug. 1, 1894, he united in marriage with his cousin, Amelia Girard. Miss Girard, his bride, had graduated from the two years course of the normal department of Greer College, Hoopston, Illinois, in 1893, and was teaching her first term of school in the fall of that year. In January 1895, they moved to Crawford County, Iowa. Mr. Blume having resigned his position as principal of the Dyersville Public schools. In March they moved into the home on the old homestead in Hanover Township and began operations as farmers. Six children were born to them: Clara, Rachel, Mary, Herman, Frederick, and Hertha. Mr. Blume soon was known to be a well read and well educated man, and so after some years his services were desired in the interest of the public. Thus he served three times as State Representative in the General Assemblies 27, 28, and 40. Then he was for several years President of the County Farmers Union, also President of the Exchange of the Union, and Director of the Fraternal Organization of the Union. In these various capacities he served faithfully, in the interest of his constituents, as his conscience would dictate, and because he thus justified the confidence and hopes of those who had called him to these various offices the number of his admirers and friends increased constantly for and near. He became known as a man who stood for the right regardless of consequences, who was truly interested in the public welfare. In his private life, too, he showed these same qualities. He was a gentleman through and through ,and in spite of his great learning, remained very modest. He was always friendly and loved to have his many friends visit him for a profitable exchange of thoughts and experiences. He loved to meet people and to give expression with words and deeds to his belief in the Brotherhood of Man. It is indeed a great loss, which the county and this immediate locality, but especially his family, suffers by his almost sudden, at least unexpected departure. They loved and appreciated him as a kindly, affectionate, and good husband and father, whose splendid manhood, fine character, good example and wise counsel was indeed a boon, for let us not forget that Mr. Blume was also a fine Christian, who knew and loved God's Word, and was guided by the same. He was a hard worker, working in fact too hard for his age. Last week he became ill. On Saturday the physician of the family advised that Mr. Blume be taken to Denison to undergo an operation but serious complications had already set in, and having suffered much intense pain he was relieved on Sunday morning at five-thirty. God took him at the age of 63 years, nine months, and eight days. With him passes one of God's noble men. Besides his dear wife and six children the burden of sorrow must be borne by three brothers: F.G. Blume and W.A. Blume of Dow City and Otto Blume of Albany, Oregon, and one sister, Mrs. Caroline Adams, Ft. Myers, Florida. His funeral was held from the homestead in Hanover Township Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Mauch of Schleswig officiating and interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse and the entire countryside was gathered to pay their last respects to the honored friend and neighbor, the vast crowd being but evidence of the respect with which the deceased was held in the community. The Bulletin joins the community in endearing to the honored and sorrowing relatives sympathy and condolences in the hour of their great loss.
