McSpadden, 85, 1450 Inez St., died at 4:40 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Wabash County Hospital. Mr. McSpadden came to Wabash as a chemist with Container Corporation. He became associated with his father-in-law in the W.D. Lynn Insurance Agency in 1945 and in 1962 bought Fisher's Insurance Agency. The merger of Mr. McSpadden's firm and Beauchamp & Son took place on April 1, 1968, and became Beauchamp & McSpadden Insurance. In his professional life, Mr. McSpadden attained the designations of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, Certified Life Underwriter, and Associate in Risk Management. In 1982, he was recognized by the Independent Insurance Agents with the Harry B. McClain Award, which is given to one agent who best exemplifies service to the community. Mr. McSpadden was named the Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce's 1982 Distinguished Citizen. He became a life member of the Honeywell Foundation board when he was 31 years old, and served as its president from February 1971 to September 1981. He retired from the board in 1988. During that time, he spent untold hours leading the planning for the construction of a new nine-hole golf course that, when combined with the nine holes of the Wabash Country Club, became the Honeywell Public Golf Course. The course was dedicated in 1980. He was a past director and chairman of the board of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, now the First Federal Savings Bank. He was a charter member of the Wabash Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was a member and frequent president of the Falls Cemetery board of directors. He also was a member of the Wabash Presbyterian Church and served as president of the board of trustees. He also served on the Wabash Country Club board of directors, and served on the committee to finance the Wabash City Schools expansion. He was a former member of the Wabash Kiwanis Club. He graduated from the University of Texas, and was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. McSpadden was born on Feb. 17, 1918, in Clifton, Texas, to Joseph and Eleanor (Porter) McSpadden. He married Virginia Lynn on Dec. 30, 1943, in New York City. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Joseph William (Jennifer) McSpadden, Wabash, Larry Douglas (Jane) McSpadden, New Paris, and Bruce Lynn (Kaye) McSpadden, West Lafayette; one sister, Josephine McSpadden, Dallas, Texas; and five grandchildren. Two brothers, one sister and one grandson are deceased. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel. The Rev. John Ritchie will officiate. #Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Hospital Oncology Department or Wabash Presbyterian Church.
