Hawkins, 63, well known potato dealer and real estate man of this vicinity, passed away suddenly while riding on a train near Clinton, Okla., Friday night. Death is believed to have been due to a paralytic stroke. Mr. Hawkins had gone south a week before with a carload of seed potatoes for the southern markets. He was traveling with the shipment at the time of his death. His son, Donald, left Saturday for Clinton, Okla., to accompany the body back to Alliance. Born in Hampshire, England, Mr. Hawkins came to the United States with his parents when he was a small boy. The family settled in Iowa near Des Moines. Later they moved to Hebron, Ia., where Mr. Hawkins was married on November 21, 1896. They lived in Oklahoma, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota. Mr. Hawkins and his family moved to Alliance about 2 years ago. Real estate, potato growing and other branches of agriculture took up much of Mr. Hawkins' attention. He was a booster for this section and always took an active interest in promoting the raising of better crops here. Mr. Hawkins was a member of the Methodist church and the Woodman lodge. He leaves a wife and a son, Donald, who resides at the home here. He also is survived by two brothers, Fred of Elk City, Okla., and Samuel John of Montico, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Vandewater of Hebron, Ia., and Mrs. Edith Fleming of Swann, Ia. The body will be taken to the Wells funeral home upon arrival here the middle of the week. The Alliance Times-Herald, Alliance, NE, March 19,1929 Nebraska Man Dies On Way To See Brother T.A. Hawkins of Brea, Nebraska, died Saturday, March 16, on the train as he was coming from Hobart to Elk City to visit with his brother, F.W. Hawkins and family here. Physicians say that heart trouble was the cause of his death. He had delivered two car loads of potatoes at Hobart and was enroute to Elk City Saturday morning when he died suddenly. The body was shipped to Nebraska when the son Donald Hawkins arrived in Clinton Monday to attend to funeral directions. Mr. Hawkins filed on a homestead in Bessie years ago and has corresponded with the M System, Perry and Leeper grocers, in Elk City in regard to selling potatoes. Relatives and friends who went to see the corpse Sunday at Clinton, were Ira Carver, Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Kidd, Mrs. Frank Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sylvester of Hydro, Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Robinson and children of Canute, Beryl White, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hawkins and daughter Opal, Leslie Hawkins and Mr. Spurgeon. The deceased leaves a wife and one son to survive him.
