Description	:	Orangeburg - Thomas "Tommie" Bruce Eklund Sr., 73, of Orangeburg, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2010, at home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at First Baptist Church of Orangeburg, with the Rev. Henry Cooper and Bud Judy officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roger Mattingly, Reed Mattingly, Wayne Hileman, Brad Judy, Tripp Judy, Ronnie Gray, Robbie Eklund and Mason Barr. Mr. Eklund was born Aug. 7, 1936, to the late Allie Ruth Turner and Ryan Bellman Eklund Sr. of Orangeburg. He graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1954 and earned his bachelor of science degree in education from Newberry College. He earned his master's degree in education and counseling from South Carolina State University. He served many years as a counselor for Vocational Rehabilitation and also served as the principal of Rivelon Elementary School in Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five. He retired after 21 years of service and he received a surprise honor when the street at the school was named Thomas B. Eklund Circle. He was instrumental in establishing and in the expansion of the Orangeburg Area Boys' and Girls' Club throughout Orangeburg and Calhoun counties. He served as the executive director for more than 35 years. Although he served on many committees and was active in many organizations, the Boys' and Girls' Club was his passion in life. He loved helping the youth of Orangeburg County and firmly believed that all children can succeed with the support of a committed adult. Mr. Eklund spent the majority of his life teaching and encouraging at-risk youth. He was also an avid supporter of the Orangeburg Fish Hatchery and their youth programs. His favorite hobbies included fishing and hunting. Mr. Eklund was a member of First Baptist Church in Orangeburg. He is survived by his wife, Christine Eklund; seven children, Mrs. Kathy (Rick) Kerr, Mr. Thomas Bruce Eklund Jr., Mrs. Angie (Bud) Judy, Mr. Hal (Tommie Jean) Eklund, Ms. Kay Barr (Wayne Hileman), Mrs. Cheryl (Ronnie) Gray and Mr. (Bubba) Charles (Lei) Maxwell Jr.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ryan Bellman Eklund Jr. (Betty) of Greenwood. Mr. Eklund received many awards and acknowledgements for his service and devotion to the residents of Orangeburg County. He was selected as the 2005 Kiwanis Club of Orangeburg Citizen of the Year. Among the awards he was most humbled by were the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, the National Professional Service Award from the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of America, the Order of the Silver Crescent Award from the state of South Carolina, and being named the person best demonstrating the character trait, compassion, by the Orangeburg Community of Character in 2002. He will be sadly missed by family and friends and fondly remembered by all who knew him. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at the home of Cheryl Gray, 1387 Binnicker Bridge Road in Cope. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Orangeburg Area Boys' and Girls' Club at P.O. Box 2783, Orangeburg, SC 29116. The family extends deepest appreciation for the support of friends and loved ones during this time of loss.
