For the last two months Mr. Wolfe had been unable to leave the house and spent the greater part of the time in bed. Thomas Carey Wolfe, son of Maurice and Ellen (Carey) Wolfe, was born in County Kerry, Ireland in 1845. He was one of a family of 12 children, all growing to maturity except one. He came with his parents to the United States and lived in LaSalle county, Illinois until 15 years of age, when the family moved to Clinton county. He was educated in the rural schools and assisted his father on the farm until he grew to manhood. When 24 years of age, Mr. Wolfe came to Carroll county and purchased 160 acres of land in Eden township, near Templeton. So capable a farmer was he that as the years passed he became one of the large land owners of that section, owning seven 80-acres tracts, which included some of the best land in the county. In 1883 the family moved to Templeton where they made their home until May 4, 1898, when they moved to Carroll and purchased the Valentine Hinricks home on North Main street, which he improved and made into a spacious home with beautiful grounds. Mr. Wolfe was married to Mary Ann James, who was born on a farm near Berlin, Wis., Feb. 15, 1874, and nine children were born to them. Those surviving with their mother are Maurice Wolfe of Jerome, Idaho, Thomas A. Wolfe of Lincoln, Neb., Edmund and John Wolfe of Chicago, Joseph J. Wolfe, Miss Ann and Miss Florence Wolfe, at home. Mrs. J. J. Meyers (Cecelia) preceded her father in death and Ella died in infancy. Mr. Wolfe also leaves one sister, Mrs. Frank Staak of Carroll, the sole remaining member of Mr. Wolfe's family. For a number of years Mr. Wolfe was a member of the school board serving as president and treasurer. While living in Templeton he became a member of the city council and so well did he execute his duties that he was afterwards elected mayor of that town. He resigned from the position when he moved to Carroll. He was one of the prominent men of the community and brought up a family of sons and daughter, who are an honor to his memory. From a humble beginning he developed into a man of affairs and preserved a policy of honor and integrity in all his business transactions. -------------------------
