Description	:	Tom's birth certificate, applied for on January 15, 1942, and registered in De Smet, SD, stated that he was born in Badger Township with a Hetland address. It was sworn to by his uncle, Nels C. Thompson, since his parents were deceased. About 1900 the family moved to a farm near Lake Poinsett in Brookings County. Later they moved into Arlington after their father died, and their mother purchased a house there. In 1917 the family moved to Brookings following his sister, Anne, who was employed there. Tom worked for farmers and in retail stores. On February 25, 1920, he graduated from the Iowa State Automobile and Tractor School in Sioux City. He went to Hetland to manage Nelson's General Merchandise Store for his cousin, Andrew Nelson in 1927. Tom acquired ownership of the store in Hetland sometime after this. Tom was a member of the school board in Hetland for 6 1/2 years, ending in 1943. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1937-1939, and was a Notary Public. In 1932 he was on a committee to work with the Red Cross. Tom moved his family to Lake Andes, SD, where he managed the G.F.Buchey General Merchandise Store. There he was a coach for a boy's basketball team. In 1945, Tom became the manager of the Farmer's Trading Post in Salem, SD. Tom moved to Canistota, SD, in 1946 where he managed the Feinburg Store. Tom then worked with Kostboth's Meat Market and Lockers. In 1960, Tom began work at a grocery store in Parker,SD, as a meat cutter until he retired in October, 1963. Tom was active in the Odd Fellow Lodge and on March 4, 1954, he received the Past Grand and Grand Lodge Degrees. In 1950 he received a certificate for his work with the boy scouts. Tom died in a hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. There were funeral services in both Canistota and Hetland, SD, and he was buried in the Hetland Cemetery.
