Embankment in dark—Drowns before help arrives—Brother Saved Last Sunday night at eleven P. M. the car driven by Guy and Tom Donald went over an embankment near Downing, Mo. From what we can gather it appears that the men, who were driving a Ford, and had some car trouble and were on their way to Downing, when they saw the lights of another car, which stopped to let them pass at a bad place in the road. The lights of the car they were approaching were very bright and the Donald's were driving with only a spot light, and in trying to get past the other car they approached too close to the embankment and went over into the ditch—some twenty feet below. Both men were caught under the overturned car in such a way that they were pinned down in the mud and water; Tom face downward, and Guy on his back and in such a manner that neither could get out nor render any assistance to the other. The other car, driven by two girls, at once drove away to get help, leaving the man, who was with them to render what aid he could. However, no help arrived for forty-five minutes and by that time Mr. Donald was dead. Mr. Guy Donald has an injured arm and is otherwise bruised, but fortunately escaped the awful fate of his brother, and reported the accident to his people in Corydon as soon as he could get to a telegraph office. The body of Thomas Donald arrived at Corydon at 2 o'clock on Monday, and the funeral was held at Mr. Donald's home, the remains being interred at the Corydon cemetery. Mr. Donald was one of Wayne County's leading and progressive citizens and was always energetic and enterprising, and on this trip was attending to business affairs when the fatality occurred. He leaves a wife, four sons, and three daughters, to mourn their loss. Mr. Donald was about 67 years of age and was born and raised in Wayne County. ********** Wayne County Democrat June 8, 1922 Obituary Thomas Donald was born in Holmes county, Ohio, on Jan. 12, 1856, and died on June 4, 1922, at the age of 66 years, 4 months and 22 days. When 7 years of age he came to Van Buren county, Iowa, and later to Wayne county, where he has lived ever since. On Feb. 13, 1878 he was married to Rebecca E. Young, and to this union were born seven children as follows: Trissie Bell Shell, Elizabeth Puckett, Charles C., Annie Isis Zimmerman, William T., Henry E. and McClelland. All of these, besides ten grandchildren and one great grandchild survive him. He is survived also by five brothers and six sisters. These are: Lewis, McClelland, Henry, Guy, Frank, Mrs. Jessie Smalley, Mrs. Elizabeth Draper, Mrs. Jennie Johnson, Mrs. Ann Smith, Mrs. Arvilla Young and Mrs. Maggie Sharp—all of them live in Wayne county. This is the first death in the family. Mr. Donald death was caused by drowning while pinned under a car in water in an auto accident, while on his way to look after business interests in Missouri, his brother Guy also narrowly escaping the same fate. Mr. Donald was a man whose business interests and love for his family were paramount. His thoughts were of his family and business rather than himself. Twenty-six years ago he united with the old Peoria Baptist church and continued for a time in that relation. He also held membership in the Odd Fellow lodge. His spirit was adventurous and courageous. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Tuesday afternoon, Pastor G.W. Fogg of the Baptist church officiating. Interment was made in the Corydon cemetery.
