D. Thornton, one of the very earliest settlers of this section, at the advanced age of almost 82 years. Death was due to a complication of ailments, principally of a dropsical nature. Of Thomas Dudley Thornton it can be truthfully said that he was one of the men who helped to blaze the trail through this section, more than 55 years having elapsed since he first beheld the primitive wilds of Fremont county. He first saw the light of day on September 23, 1827, his birthplace being near Covington, Ky., and in his native town and her sister city, Cincinnati, just across the Ohio river, the days of his boyhood and early manhood were passed. In the latter place on March 17, 1852, he was united in marriage with Miss Julia Huston and two years later the young couple in company with other home seekers came to Iowa, making the trip by boat from St. Joseph and landing at Linden, near Rock Port, Mo., and from thence overland to Fremont county, passing their first night in their new home within a couple of miles of the spot where death overtook him. To this union 13 children were born, four of whom died quite young, the surviving ones being Charles P. and Thomas of Junction City, Oregon; J. V. of Council Bluffs; T. C. of Walback, Nebraska; M. M. of Sidney; Mrs. Lillie Hiatt of Burdette, S. D.; W. O. of South Omaha; Fred of Haddam, Kansas; D. H. who resides in the state of Washington. The wife and mother departed this life March 2, 1879, and sleeps in the Rector cemetery near Knox. On September 13, 1888, he again married, this time to Mrs. Charlotte Beason. Five children were the result of this union, two of whom have gone beyond, the other three, Orris, Mabel and Floyd, together with the mother, survive. Throughout life Mr. Thornton was a man of great activity and by thrift an strict economy had possessed himself of a goodly store of this world's goods consisting of farm lands and city property, his latest acquirement in the latter being the Thornton Opera House which was erected only last winter. Funeral services will be held from the family home tomorrow morning, July 3, at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. A. Marshall assisted by Rev. Geo. C. Hicks, and interment will be made in the Rector cemetery.
