Kelley in Altoona, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Richard- son of Valley Junction after which the remains were laid to rest in the Altoona Cemetery. Thos. Earl Simpkins was born in Pella, September 12, 1875, and came to Altoona nearly twenty years ago with his parents, William and Naomi Simpkins. He was a painter and car- penter by trade and has worked for many people in this vicinity. By nature Earl was of a retiring bash- ful disposition and few people ever came to know him intimately but those who enjoyed his friendship found many good things in his life and character. He was true to his friends, generous to a fault, and hon- orable in his dealings. If he had an enemy in the whole community the Herald does not know of it. He had a fine musical voice and many a time have the boys here crowded around to hear "Denny" sing some simple or popular song as no one else could sing. But he had a fault. He was addict- ed to the use of intoxicants and this may have accounted for his untimely death. No one will ever know wheth- er it was premeditated or acciden- tal death. Nearly twenty years ago Mr. Wm Simpkins moved to Altoona from Knoxville where he was a con- tractor and builder. His family con- sisted of nine children and himself and wife Their has been a very unfortunate family for instead of the home sheltering them, the majority of the family sleep beneath the sod in the Altoona cemetery. The first death in this family was Miss Pearl who died in San Antonia, Texas, Feb- ruary 28, 1893 from the ravages of tub- urculosis. Clyde Austin, the young- est son, died August 29, 1898, at the age of twenty years. he had been away from home working in Missouri where he contracted typhoid fever. two years later Wm. Simpkins, the father, was called hence. His death was from the effects of La Grippe. Another two years and mother Simp- kins was laid beside her husband and children in the Altoona cemetery. In 1905 the youngest daughter Kate, wife of J. R. Kelley, passed away at Phoenix, Arizona, where Mr. Kelley had taken her in the vain hopes she might survive the attack of consump- tion. And last the body of Thos. Earl has been added to this family of the dead. The survivors of this fam- ily are, Mrs. Laura Griffith, Valley Junction; Mrs. Jennie Harris, Des Moines; Mr. Milton Simpkins, Alaska; Mr. Alex Simpkins, Altoona; and Mr. William R. Simpkins, Los Angeles, California. To the living the Herald bespeaks the sympathy of the com- munity. their's have been a useful and respected family and their un- timely death we mourn.
