Carpenter contractor and builder was born in Washington county Pennsylvania October 2 1830 and was raised there. When fourteen years of age he commenced to learn the carpenter's trade. In 1853 he moved to Ohio and came to Iowa settling in Van Buren county in 1854. Worked at his trade ten years and came to this county in the spring of 1864. Engaged in the lumber business and kept a hotel one year and then took up his present business. He held the position of foreman of the building of the first large courthouse at Winterset also two school buildings at Knoxville. In 1879 he took a trip to Kansas and spent eighteen months. He married Miss Naomi Jolley in March 1853. She was born in Washington county Pennsylvania on the twenty second of September 1833 in the same house in which her father was born. They have nine children living: Jennie, Milton, Emma, Alexander, Adelia, Kate, William, Earl, and Clyde. Lost one: Bell. Mrs Simpkins is a member of the Baptist Church. Altoona Herald, Altoona, IA July 28, 1900, page 4 OBITUARY At the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Kelley, in Des Moines, July 22, occured the death of William N. Simpkins of Altoona. Mr. Simpkins went to Des Moines about a week ago prior to his death, to take treatment of a specialist, for a complication of disease from which he had been suffering for sometime. He was a very quiet , unassuming man, and bore his suffering so quiet- ly and patiently that his many friends did not realize that he was so feeble, and were shocked to hear of his death. William nelson Simpkins was born in Washington, PA Oct. 2, 1830. Was married to Naomi Jolley, march 31, 1853. To this union ten children were born, three of whom preceeded their father to the great beyond, leaving a wife and three daughters, and four sons, to mourn the loss of a be- loved husband and father. He came to Iowa 45 years ago, and has for many years been engaged as a master builder, he united with the Christian church at this place four years ago, having been a mem- ber of the church for forty years, and now, having almost reached his three score and ten years, like a ripened shock, has been gathered home, leav- ing a large circle of friends who deep- ly feel the loss, and extend to the be- reaved family their heartfelt sym- pathy. Services were conducted at the home by pastor Rev. Hastie, assisted by Rev. Stire, afterwhich interrment took place in the Altoona cemetery. Note: Transcribed as published
