In 1880 the family moved to Kansas and settled on the Smith homestead south and east of Vermillion, where Mr. Smith grew to manhood in the sturdy influence of a truly thrifty Dutch pioneer home. In 1880 the family moved to Kansas and settled on the Smith homestead south and east of Vermillion, where Mr. Smith grew to manhood in the sturdy influence of a truly thrifty Dutch pioneer home. He became a member by baptism of the Christian church of Vermillion in early manhood and was privileged to labor and grow in this organization for good, helping to rebuild the Vermillion church. On April 23, 1896 he was united in marriage to Anna C. Sunderland, daughter of another Pioneer family that had moved west from Pennsylvania in the early 1880’s. To this union was born four children, Leslie Frank- lin of Westmoreland, Kansas, William Daniel of Vermillion, Kansas, Faye Elsie Myers of the home and Mrs. E. N. Middle- brook, Santa Barbara, California. They built their home adjacent to the Smith homestead where they lived until the winter of 1902 when on account of Mr. Smith’s health they moved to Vermillion where he was actively engaged in several business enterprises until 1928. In that year they moved to Frankfort, Kansas there establish- ing the hardware business in which he was actively engaged at the time of his death. In 1912 he became a member of the Masonic Lodge of Vermillion and was a devoted and faithful follower of the teaching of the order. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Anna, four children; one sister, Mrs. Henry Jessee, four brothers, A.A. Smith, E.E. Smith C.W. Smith and Wilson Smith; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Vermillion Christian Church with Reverend D. Hall officiating. Burial was in the Vermillion Cemetery, Vermillion, Kansas. Pallbearers were D.W. Ludwick, Charles Reed, L. Pennington, C.A. McLaughlin, Vernard Fairchild and J.J. Harper.
