Rexrode at 6:40 o’clock Tuesday evening at his home one mile west of Monterey, and in his death Highland county has lost one of her most respected, useful citizens. Mr. Rexrode was fully aware of his condition and faced the end with perfect composure. With him at the hour of his death were all of his near relatives, most of whom had been constantly near his bedside during the long weeks of his illness. Mr. Rexrode’s death was caused by a complication of troubles following typhoid fever, some of which led his doctors to perform one or two operations at the K. D. Hospital in an effort to save his live. Despairing of life, he expressed a desire to die at home, and it will be one of the gratifying features of the sad case that this desire was realized. In a very weak state, he was brought home from the hospital last Sunday, and during his rational moments was able to recognize the familiar scenes that were dear to him. Thomas J. Rexrode was born on Straight Creek this county 39 years ago, a son and oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. P. Rexrode, who tottering under the weight of years, survive him. Those of his immediate family who survive are his widow, formerly Miss Vandevender, and five bright little girls. One brother, Jospeh Rexrode, of Straight Creek and two sisters, Miss Sadie, returning missionary from the foreign field and Mrs. J. B. Hicklin, of Monterey. While the violent character of Mr. Rexrode’s illness and the serious complications that followed left but little hope of recovery, the sorrow Tuesday over the announcement of his death was widespread, because the sad news carried with it the universal conviction that a useful like was ended and a good man gone. In early life, Mr. Rexrode espoused the cause of the Master, uniting with the Methodist church, and during the years that followed he was faithful and consistent, ardent and liberal in his support of all institutions of the church. As a citizen he was quiet and law-abiding, his life being such as to impress all who knew him with his sterling integrity, his manliness, his good citizenship. His home-life was ideal. He was a devoted father, a consistent chruchman, and one whose career was above suspicion and reproach. His was a clean life, one worthy of commendation and in him the county loses a good citizen and a manly man. His funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, following an appropriate service at the Methodist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. C. Thrasher, assisted by Rev. N. A. Parker, of the Presbyterian church, and Rev. Josiah Beverage of the Church of the Brethren. The audience was one of the largest ever assembled in the church. Interment was in the Monterey cemetery.
