Rexrode, full of years and good works, came to a close Friday morning last at the home of his son, Jos. A. Rexrode, four miles east of Monterey, and in his death Highland county has lost one of her most worthy citizens and prominent churchmen. Mr. Rexrode had been a semi-invalid for several years, due to rheumatism, much of the time confined to a wheel chair, and when, a few weeks ago, complications set in, it was realized that, in his enfeebled condition, he could not long survive. Death came to release him from suffering at the time stated. Mr. Rexrode was a native of Upshire county, W.Va., born nearly 80 years ago, and was a member of a large family of three sons and nine daughters, all of whom lived to manhood and womanhood, five of them still surviving. He came to Highland in 1875 and soon thereafter was married to Miss Virginia Beverage, daughter of the late John Beverage, and with whom he lived happily until three or four years ago, when his consort was claimed by death. Of the four children born to them one son, Jos. A. Rexrode, survives, and one daughter, Mrs. J.B. Hicklin, of Monterey. Miss Sadie, older daughter, died seven years ago while serving as a missionary in China, and she is buried in the Orient. T.J., an older son, passed away eleven years ago at his home near Monterey. Mr. Rexrode was a devout Christian, untiring, and faithful in the Master’s service. For fifty years he was superintendent of the Sabbath school at Seybert the little chapel in which he worshiped, and for many years a licensed exhorted in the Methodist church South, of which he was a member. Though humble and retiring in disposition, his life was “a living epistle,” and it has left an impress on the entire community. It is safe to assert that no one who knew Mr. Rexrode has ever questioned his sincerity as a Christian or his integrity and honesty as a private citizen. Funeral services were conducted in the home Sunday morning at 10 o’clock in charge of his pastor, Rev. H.L. Hoffman, and were largely attended. In addition to those of his neighbors and friends, the following relatives from a distance were present at the last rites; Mrs. Lucetta Hall, his sister, Miss Nellie Chitester, niece, Robt. Rexrode, a nephew, of Buchannan, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs, Sil Douglas and son, Charles, of Addison, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Rexrode and son, Luther, of Harrisonburg; Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Wagner and Mrs. T.S. Wagner of Churchville; Mrs. Warren Townsend of Staunton. Interment was in the family burying-ground.
