Read More	Thursday, December 24, 1925 - The Dakota Republican, Vermillion, South Dakota, page 1 THOMAS JORDAN DIED MONDAY, DECEMBER 21 Resident of Clay County for Over Sixty Years - Body Will Arrive From California Saturday Thomas Jordan, a resident of Clay county for over 60 years, died Monday at the hospital in Long Beach, California, after a brief illness, according to a message received in Vermillion Tuesday. The message stated that his sons, C.E. Jordan and Dr. Peter Jordan, would arrive in Vermillion Saturday forenoon with their father's body. It is assumed that Mr. Jordan's illness was brief. J.C.F. Elmore received a letter last week from his son Clark in Long Beach, in which he said he had met Charley Jordan and he told him that his father had been having some stomach trouble, and they had sent him to the hospital. Clark went by the hospital to call on Mr. Jordan and found him sitting on the porch, so he thought that his illness was not serious, as it proved to be. Mr. Jordan was a native of Ireland, coming to this country when a boy of about 12 years of age. He lived first at DeKalb and Batavia, Illinois, where he was married May 28, 1857, to the faithful wife who was his partner in life for 62 years until death claimed her April 1, 1919. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom are still living. C.E. Jordan is a resident of Long Beach, and Peter of San Jose, California. Other sons are Elmer, Frank, of Yankton, and Dr. George T. Jordan of Chicago. The five sons were all in Vermillion in 1917, when Mr. and Mrs. Jordan celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mr. Jordan came to Clay county in 1865, and settled on a farm three miles east of Vermillion, on the bottom, under the brow of the hill. He is said to have been the first man with a family to settle in Cly county. His father ws also a settler here at that time, and owned a farm joining that of his son. It is said of them, that in coming from Iowa, they walked much of the distance to save carfare, which was then 10 cents a mile. The farm east of Vermillion was the family home for many years. As his family came of school age however, he moved to Vermillion, and established a home on Prospect street, at the corner of Clark street. From this headquarters he still farmed the old home place for a number of years. During the nineties Mr. Jordan had a little store and a fleet of rowboats south of the old depot. At that time there was good boating on the Vermillion river, and Mr. Jordan became the friend and confidant of all of the young people of that day, who liked to spend the summer evenings on the river. During recent years Mr. Jordan usually spent the winer months with his sons in California, coming back to the old Vermillion home in the spring and remaining until cold weather. When he left Vermillion this fall for the winter, he seemed as active and well as usual, notwithstanding his ninety years. Speaking of the death of his old friend, John L. Jolley said: "He was one of the finest men who ever lived, everyone was his friend, and he never did anything wrong in his life." This reflects the sentiment of the peope of Vermillion in regard to their old friend and neighbor. Funeral Arrangements Arrangements have been made to hold the funeral in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. L.A. McDonald will have charge of the services.
