Hoover, 52, of 1336 Mowrey Ave., was killed instantly at 5:30 a.m. today when the truck in which he was riding left Highway 80 about six miles northwest of Marseilles, Ill. The truck hit an overpass abutment. He was employed as a driver for the United Buckingham Freight Lines in Des Moines and was on a trip from Des Moines to Fort Wayne, Ind. He was asleep in the sleeper cab at the time of the accident. The son of Henry and Theresa O’Connor Hoover, he was born in Ottumwa on Nov. 10, 1914, and had lived here all of his life. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge, and Teamster Union Local No. 147. An Army veteran of World War II, he entered the service Jan. 15, 1943, and was discharged Dec. 9, 1915 at Camp Grant, Ill. His marriage to Catherine Burns took place on Nov. 24, 1951, in Ottumwa. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Rod Hoover, at home; one stepson, Johnny Doggett of Westminister, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Glenda Fitsimones of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; and his mother, Mrs. Theresa Hoover of Ottumwa. He also leaves one brother, William Hoover of Golden, Colo., and six sisters, Mrs. Mary Todd of Golden, Colo., Mrs. Betty Lathrop of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Donna L. Henson of Des Moines, Mrs. Bernadine Powell and Mrs. Sally Boley, both of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Pat Day of Webster City. His father and one sister, Madeline preceded him in death. The body was returned to the Johnson Funeral Chapel. “Hoover Funeral,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” February 13, 1968: Funeral services for Thomas J. Hoover, of 1336 Mowrey, who was killed instantly in a truck accident Monday morning near Marseilles, Ill., will be Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The pastor, the Rev. Denis Cahalan will celebrate a Requiem Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with the local American Legion post in charge of military rites. Pallbearers will be Fred Heckart, Fred McLearn, Dwight Jones, Don McKelvey, Dave Sutton and William Johnson. Friends will meet at the Johnson Funeral Chapel Wednesday at 8 p.m. to recite the Rosary.
