Hoover, 72, a member of the local selective service board since its organization in 1940, died Saturday at 11:20 p.m. at his home in Agency after a lenghty illness. The selective service board for Wapello County, including Mr. Hoover, Fred M. King and Carl Johnson, has served continuously since the beginning of the program, one of the few in the nation to do so. When the Selective Service Act first went into effect, there were two boards in the county, and these three men composed one of them. Later they were the successor board when the work was combined. Morrell Veteran Mr. Hoover was an employe in the mechanical department of John Morrell & Co. for two years prior to his retirement in 1953. He had been a coal miner during his earlier life. He was born Oct. 15, 1888, in Ottumwa, the son of Ephram [sic] and Laura Albertson Hoover. He had always lived in Ottumwa prior to moving to Agency seven years ago. In addition to his service on the selective service board, Mr. Hoover was a member and former president of Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Workman, Local No. 236, A.F.&L., and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. His marriage to Teresa O’Conner took place Jan. 7, 1914, in Ottumwa. She survives. Many Survivors Also surviving are two sons, Thomas J. Hoover of Ottumwa and William F. Hoover of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; seven daughters, Mrs. Mildred Boley and Mrs. Bernadine Powell of Ottumwa, Mrs. Mary Todd and Mrs. Betty Lathrop of Golden, Colo., Mrs. Madaline Coberg of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Patricia Day of Webster City, and Mrs. Donna Henson of St. Joseph, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; three brothers, William W., Earl and Ernest Hoover, all of Ottumwa, and a sister, Mrs. Eliza Sporer of Ottumwa. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with Rev. C.W. Gault of the East End Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Herman Miller, Thomas Wells, Jess White, Elmer Roe, Fred MacLearn and Joe Short. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Col. Glenn R. Bowles, Iowa, director of selective service, Elmer K. Bekman, Dr. D.L. Rater, Fred M. King and Carl Johnson.
